Well, The reason for my picking up Mens Health was that I had gotten sick of FHM and Maxim. Both magazines were full of pretty naked women cavorting in various manners. Now I'm as red-blooded as the next man, but explaining to your boss that u were in fact reading an educational magazine and not hardcore porn on company time was getting a trifle awkward. So the next visit to the shop I figured let's buy a copy of this Mens Health lark. Have to say that I found it to be almost perfect. The general idea of Mens health is to make men think a little - something women have tried to force men to do since the dark ages. Mens Health looks at every aspect of a man's life, be it eating habits, sexual prowess, physical wellbeing, dressing issues, motoring and of course working out. Each area is looked at pretty much the way an average guy would look at it and the writing seems to be done by these 'average guys' rather then specialist 'gurus'. What you get is pretty much easy to follow advice and information. This is also backed up in the rather awesome Mens health website where you can browse articles and also check out how to do exercises properly in the downloadable videos held within the site. I personally think the key success of the magazine is that it destroys certain myths and actually makes you want to change, be it your diet or body shape as they show u its acceptable - and fairly easy. Possibly the best section in the magazine is every month they take a topic and have readers comment on it, anything from suffering in pain, depression to being scared to go to a gym. Reading experiences of other individuals brings it home a lot more and opens a willingness to accept that you are not perfect and that everyone could do with a little help sometimes. However, to look only at the positives would be a bit too biased. There are a few negatives. The fashion area does seem to foc
us on the perfect man, rather then catering for the average Joe. If most people had bodies like the guys modelling the clothes I doubt anyone would buy the magazine -there would be no need! The food as well can sometimes take some serious preparation, and the chances of having all the necessary ingredients is also unlikely. What would be useful would be a back-t0-basics cookery edition showing people (i.e. men) how to do the proper basics round a kitchen. All in all though it's a top read and has provided much useful information which can be used in daily life ? also makes u wanna hit the gym a hell of a lot more!
