Advantages: Easy to read, Useful advice
Disadvantages: Selective fashion tastes, Emphasis on hunk-o-matic bodies
This is my boyfriend’s magazine of choice, and when he’s at work or getting ready I take the chance to flick through it. It’s first grace is that it is less objectionable than some of the other men’s magazines he could be reading i.e. FHM, Maxim, Penthouse! The magazine is generally aimed at young/ish men, say 18-45, from the viewpoint of fitness and health, but including most conceivable aspects of a man’s life – work, sport, relationships, lifestyle, fashion etc. Like its rivals it does contain many glossy adverts but more of men than women, mostly advertising fragrances and attire. It begins with regular letters, health bulletins and editorial snippets of general information. It then moves through its features of the month, some gym work and finishes with sport, travel and fitness sections. The regular sex tips/advice are great, in depth and focus on pleasing women as much as men but use gratuitous language – it can be too clinical and can offer a one-time fix for all women, which as we ladies know, isn’t available! The health and well-being features are well written and serious. They offer workable solutions to everyday, common situations facing the everyday man and are probably just what the almost-clueless bloke needs to survive! I suppose we ought to be thankful because we need our men; and in keep with the sex and fitness tips, these articles help our fellas better please us! The fitness section/s can be rather intense – a seemingly complicated and exhaustive series of exercise advice with beefcakes modeling them. Though the team at the magazine may think they are providing inspiration with these types of models, they probably put men off and humble them a little. The fashion and travel sections are smaller, but by trying to cater for such a wide target audience, miss our tastes by a margin. Overall this is quite a good magazine to flick through for
both sexes, but I’d leave the serious reading and fitness-bible following to the male of the species. Certainly does no harm for a woman to check her fella’s latest edition out – if not to pick out pertinent points and/or sexual advice ;)
