Advantages: Very educational and responsible magazine.
Disadvantages: Not always practical for the average guy.
Like most men I'm a bit embarrassed to be seen with this magazine. One, I look nothing like the man on the front cover with the perfect hair and the rock hard abs, and two, from a distance it looks like you’re holding a copy of “Gay Monthly”. Girls somehow get away with carrying magazines with beautiful women on the cover, for us men it doesn’t work so well carrying a magazine with a smiling pretty boy grinning at you in an almost worrying type of way. Men’s Health is in fact a very serious magazine and is packed with sensible (although mostly impractical) diet tips, exercise routines and general health articles. The diet tips show how to cut fat and sugar from your diet without losing excitement in your meals. The problem is that the meals consist of about twenty different combinations of fruit and vegetables cooked to a special recipe which only a number of TV chefs could manage successfully. The exercise routines in Men’s Health are pretty good although you get the impression that you have to choose between having a flat stomach or bulging biceps or rock thighs because each set of exercises takes up half the day by the time you’ve done the warm up, the stretching, the main exercises and the cool down. If course you can cut out the post-exercise shower but on my girlfriend’s advice I wouldn’t recommend that. What is probably the most useful in Men’s Health is the health articles which give a very detailed, yet relatively easy to understand, synopsis of medical conditions, warning signs, treatments etc. Us men are usually pretty ignorant about our health stemming back to our forefather’s attitude of “if I’m breathing I’m still ok”. Educating men about their bodies is no bad thing and, admittedly, I’ve exaggerated a little with how much effort the dieting and exercise takes. This is a good magazine, worth the money and worth keeping
for reference after you’ve read it. If only they could do something about the cover I’d be happier!

machar - 23/11/00 Any magazine that makes men more aware of their health is definitely a good thing! |
