Advantages: FREE! Good photos and succinct
Disadvantages: loads of ads, but its not really a disadvantage as they have to make money somehow
I first saw the Metro newspaper when I had to get the bus to work one day around three years ago and I could not believe there was a free newspaper on the bus! As I got off the bus and had to walk across town to get to work, I saw five people giving out the Metro and I was amazed I did not know this existed before.
The Metro is a free newspaper that is put on buses, at train stations, on tubes and handed out in the street in the early morning (8-9am is the best time to pick one up I find). It is the same size (dimensions) as The Sun newspaper and is roughly around 58-64 pages long. It is pretty much the same as something like The Sun (minus the page three model)and I find it to be an overview of all the major news stories.
It has a headline story, a little cartoon on the front, the weather forecast on page two, a 60-second interview with an author or someone famous, an arts & entertainment section, the day's TV guide, 5-7 pages of local classifieds, a dating page, horoscopes, a puzzles section, 8-12 pages of sport and lots of adverts along with news stories.
Most stories are half a page or less and there are adverts on just about every single page albeit full page or very small ads. I suppose this is how the Metro keeps itself going, through advertising so the sheer number of ads is understandable. If you keep your eyes open too there are often vouchers for McDonalds or Greggs or ads for special meal offers at the bottom of the back page.
I think the Metro is a great idea. It keeps everyone quiet on the bus or tube, it gives you something to do when you are in transit to work and you can keep up to date with the major news stories without having to spend any money. There are often funny wildlife photos in the Metro too so if I see the Metro, I will bring a copy home and cut out the pictures I like from it. I woudl say the Metro has saved me a fortune in buying newspapers as it is as good as a newspaper if you only buy newspapers to check out what has been hapening in the world.
If you rely on daily newspapers such as the large broadsheets or buy a paper for a specific writer, style of journalism, politics, opinion or business news then the Metro may not cut it for you. If you just grab a newspaper for something quick to read to keep roughly aware of world news, then the Metro will provde a great overview. Very recommended. And its FREE.
