Advantages: Best club magazine, free CD to listen to
Disadvantages: None!
As far as clubbing magazines go, Mixmag's got it down pat! Not only has it been in the business for by far the longest time, but it has struck the right balance between music, clubs, and crap! Mixmag has the regular clubland listings at the back, and the 'tranzmitter' at the front which is 30 pages of news and 'smaller' features. The mixmag sense of humour is good one - it insists on having a sarcastic laugh at everyone elses' expense! You'll find that they cover every single dance-music festival in details [their infamour mixmag ice-cream van is always present!] and have features the most innovative people in the dance music industry [Paul Van Dyk, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold etc.] The magazine has a bias towards trance and techno culture, although they don't hold any sympathies with the so-called 'crasher kids [Gatecrasher cyber-freaks]. My favourite section though, is chill - dubbed 'something to read when you can't read any more'. It lists a whole page full of the monthly selection of answer-phone messages left on the 'mongo hotline' - by stoned clubbers! It is by far the most entertaining read you'll get from a club magazine - and they have now started to include a free CD each month on the cover!
