Advantages: Great information and articles, good gifts, great price
Disadvantages: None
I have been an avid reader of this magazine for over a year now, I first started to buy it when I was around 7 months pregnant so I could have some baby knowledge behind me! And boy, am I glad that I did!
I seaarched through Ciao to find a review on it, and although there are 18 reviews, there aren't newer than 2004, so I thought I would give an up to date look at Mother and Baby Magazine, as I am sure some things in the magazine have changed in the 3 years since the last review! So here goes my little review:
*The Magazine*
The magazine is currently retailing for 2.35 for a copy, and the magazine is printed monthly. The issues come out at the end of a calendar month, and it is always for the following month i.e. June 2007's issue came out at the end of April 2007. Compared to other similar magazines, this is a reasonable price, and I think you get a good lot of reading for your money!
Usually, you also get a free gift on the cover of your magazine. Obviously, these are baby related gifts, and some of the gifts I have received include a Teletubbies plate, sunshades for the car, a Nursery Rhymes CD, a fleecey blanket and a changing mat. Not bad if you ask me! If I haven't needed a gift, I always know someone who can make use of them!
Now I will give you a little run through of the typical featurs you will find each month in the magazine. Firstly, there is always a letters page, which shows readers' opinions on things in previous issues and general chat about all things baby.
Nine Magical months is the story of one mums pregnancy and the first 8 months of her babies life, with photos taken at each stage and this always is a 3 page spread. I love this feature as they do the article using all sorts of mums, working mums, stay-at-home mums etc.
Another favourite part of the magazine for me is the Testing section. Each month, the magazine tests 2 different products, and they are actually tested by real mums! I can verify this as I have actually been a tester myself. It is useful to get a range of opinions and several times I have used these articles to make a decision about a product I have needed for my son.
Birth Stories is an obvious must for a parenting magazine. They usually showcase 3 readers' birth stories, usually all on the same subject i.e. "You won't believe what happened" or "I have birth abroad" etc. They usually show a photo casebook as well, but beware these are really graphic birth imges, not for the squeamish My partner nearly fainted when he saw the pictures!
There is also a toddler section, which talks about things for mums with older children, probably from about 1 year old onto 3 years old. It has given advice ofn tantrums, potty training and how to broach the subject of the birds and the bees with your toddler. I have kept all my old issues so I can refer to these now my son is getting to this stage in his life!!
The last regular feature that comes to mind is the diaries of 4 different mums, right at the back of the magazine. Each mum is at a different stage of development with their child i.e. one is pregnant, one has a newborn, one has a toddler and the other has older children. They are a good read when you have 10 spare minutes!!
I also love reading the readers dilemmas, where readers of M&B write in and give their advice to the readers, and also I love the tips I find in here about money saving, weaning, and many more parenting topics! There is even a page for the Dads, which is a nice touch so they don't feel too left out!
This is a great magazine with all you would expect from a parenting magazine, and a bit more on top. The free gifts are not junk as you might think, and it really is a bible for new mums with picture guides showing the most basic tasks such as nappy changes and bathing a newborn! Marvellous!
P.S. There is also a great website for this magazine, which includes a Message-board to talk to lots of other mums like you! I'm a member so see you there!! x
Summary: The best baby magazine out there!
