Advantages: contains loads of useful information
Disadvantages: none
Mother and baby magazine is brilliant! I first started buying it when I was pregnant with Charlotte, and it proved to be a very good source of information. Most months there are free gifts that come with the magazine – in May there are two free bibs featuring Kipper. The quality is quite good as they are plastic backed. The magazine is divided into different sections: From Bump to Birth – This section deals with all things relating to pregnancy. There are progress charts telling you at what development stage your baby is for your pregnancy week. This section is usually divided into 3-month intervals with one interval every month. There are usually pictures or diagrams as well and not only is development mentioned but your emotional needs as well. This section is very comprehensive – in fact it is much better than the books provided by your midwife. There is also a section where a midwife will answer queries and worries – these are usually questions you would have yourself. There is also a section on readers births that help you get ready for the big day. I found it quite comforting to read about what other women had been through. Hello Baby – This section deals with your newborn. Each month they will concentrate on an aspect of caring for baby. In May’s issue the issue is cleaning baby from top to tail through to bathing. There is also a brilliant cut out and keep section on first aid skills which could prove to be vitally important. There is also a section on baby’s health that deals with the latest medical information plus common problems such as cradle cap. This section is brilliant – especially when they do features on colic, I read this section every night when Charlotte was going through the dreaded C! Toddler Time This section is for older babies and Mother and Baby is presently following the progress of two children ̵
1; Karl and Charlotte (good name!). They have followed these children since birth and every month give an update on what development stage each child is. This is good to read because each child is at a different stage although they are the same age. It shows you that children develop at their own pace. Best Buys – This section is a bit like dooyoo! Parents take different items and road test them for Mother and Baby. It is really interesting to read and worth taking a look before you spend your precious pennies. The parents don’t pull any punches – if they think something is rubbish they say so! Mother and Baby Best buys are the best of the items tested; also they give a Mother and Baby Best Value to the cheapest but best quality item. This month cots are tested – which is useful to read before you go and spend a lot of money on a cot that is not worth the money. Mum’s Club - This section is dedicated to parents – it deals with adult issue like maternity rights for pregnant women. There is also an advice section for parents with relationship worries. There are also sections dedicated just to dads so that they don’t feel left out! Just for You – This section contains reader’s letters, competitions and Mother and Baby offers. There is a useful directory that lists all of the suppliers featured in the magazine and a back issue list, which shows the topics, covered for each magazine. The classified advertisements at the back of the magazine are also useful. These contains ads for tens machines, terry nappies, maternity wear etc. This is a very good read through pregnancy up until pre-school. It can get repetitive though (I suppose there is only so much you can write about babies and bumps!). At £1.95 per month you get a thick magazine with some advertisements but not so many that it overwhelms it. All I can say is that if you are ex
pecting a baby this magazine will become one of your best friends all through your pregnancy and beyond
