Advantages: non bloated, informative
Disadvantages: nil
New Internationalist is a magazine for the socially aware reader. It comes as a monthly, and as far as I am aware it is not available in the shops- It costs around £24 a year and is delivered to your door. Each month is based around a new issue. There are many perspectives given on the issue, but always from a world objective. Big business is frowned upon and it's very much a environmentalist/green/socialist perspective. Subjects are wide ranging and well researched and presented. Recent months have been on fish farming, gay and lesbian rights, the World Trade Organisation, Slavery.... It isn't just a political rant either, the articles are well researched and most importantly concise. The size of the magazine is what I like most about it- it's only about 30 to 40 pages long each issue, and the articles are worth reading. It would seem incongruous to me if an environmentalist magazine had half a rainforest to prove its point. It also makes it very readable. You can actually read the whole magazine while, many others are so bloated with ads and features that it makes complete reading impossible, there are a few adverts but they tend to be for ethical funds and support groups. The magazine itself is glossy and well presented with pictures, photos and graphs to explain points. It could be read by a variety of ages, I can't think of much in it that wouldn't be appropriate to a 13 year old, although I'd imagine that the average reader is much older. I'd recommend it to all, it gives a perspective of life which isn't much seen in the majority of the media. The website is www.newint.org.

tuftyclub - 03/06/01 didn't know I could change it!Have done so now.
It is a global thing with offices in the US,UK Australia,Canada......all over. The journalists are multi national too, so someone may be a national name in India- but I wouldn't recognise them. The standard of analysis is high though.
Uk Office is at 01858 434958 |
