Advantages: Sports is decent, Martin Lewis' column is good
Disadvantages: Too much emphasis on C-list celebrities and reality TV shows
I'm not a big newspaper reader (I prefer to get the latest news online), but my in-laws get the News of the World delivered to their door every week so I regularly have the "pleasure" of flicking through the chip paper material.
I can honestly say that the News of the World (NOTW) is rubbish for serious news. This morning's edition is packed full of irrelevant guff that's of no use to anybody. It seems to just report the awful programmes that ITV had on the previous night - Britain's Got Talent etc.
The other dominant factor in this paper is its obsession with C-list celebrities... Jordon, Peter Andre and people on Big Brother all feature heavily. Where's the proper news?
However NOTW does have a couple of redeeming features - there's a useful TV mag that removes the need to buy the Radio Times (although this has a heavy focus on reality shows and boring soaps). The sports section isn't too bad, including a football pull-out with all the results and reviews of Saturday's games in all 4 English professional leagues. Recently they've also had a page written by Martin Lewis (of Money Saving Expert). He answers readers' questions and also provides his own tips about everything related to money.
Sadly the few good features don't make up for what is mostly a very poor rag.
Summary: You'll maybe get 5 minutes worth of info, buy something else or just go to the BBC News website

- 31/05/09 People who buy the 'red tops' know they're not going to get groundbraking newsworthy revelations, they expect Guff.
Those who want proper news should buy a proper newspaper, like the Sunday Star, or the People |
