Advantages: Lots of information, Fun to read, Cheaper than others, Pages smell nice, Free gifts
Disadvantages: Badly written
I am quite a gamer, so I love to write about games, read about games and of course play games! My favourite magazine is actually the Official Xbox 360 Magazine, but at around £5-6 every month, it wasn't worth it for what it is. This magazine is £3.99 a month, and subscribing to it will get you a decent gift as well as the magazine delivered to your door every month on release date. It isn't the greatest magazine, but can sometimes be interesting to read. I am much more of a Microsoft Gamer, but I do own a few consoles made by Nintendo.
The magazine's look changes every month. They actually get readers to design front covers, which sometimes make it onto the actual cover of one of the magazines. The logo 'Nintendo' is always at the top on the front with the words 'The Official Magazine' just below. Above the Nintendo logo, they notify you that the magazine includes information on: Wii, Game Boy, DS and Gamecube. The design is published by Future Publishing.
The opening page always has an A-Z of the games featured in the magazine with according page numbers. It has a 'Meet The Team' section too, which is pretty much the same each month. At the bottom of the page, there is a section titled 'Our Promise To You', which reads: 'Official Nintendo Magazine is written by experienced Nintendo fans. While out official status gives unlimited access to the newest Nintendo games and the people who make them, our reviews are 100% honest and impartial'.
The magazine normally features a section that changes month to month. Standard sections are: Features, Reviews, Game Guides, Directory and News. Features are normally the highlights of the magazine with articles about new games or news in general. The Reviews section is the bit where you will find reviews on all the latest games, even the bad ones. In the Game Guides section, you can read through guides with tips and help for newer games. Directory consists of Letters and emails from readers as well as information on the website (www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk), a download section for wii downloads, a retro section, a challenge section where you can take part in competitions to beat records on games as well as the Rated part where you can view every game and see what percentage they scored.
The magazine is very colloquial and informal obviously. It isn't very well-written either. It does contain some good information and facts however, like on upcoming releases and the reviews are normally accurate to read. The Directory section is always interesting, and every month they have a few competitions, which you can enter to win games and other prizes.
You are normally given a 'free' gift with each magazine every month. These gifts are in inverted commas as I just wrote, because the price of them is obviously included in the price you pay for the magazine, but they are always called 'free gifts'. Some of these gifts I have kept, others I have chucked. Some have been key rings, calendars and mini characters and accessories. Others have been stickers and posters, which I am not too fond of, so will just tuck away in the magazine.
The magazine has adverts all the way through for Nintendo-related magazines as well as games and other bits and bobs. The magazine always includes a voucher for a game every month for use with the electrical store Currys. These vouchers are normally £5 off vouchers, and are quite useful. They also always have an Official Sales chart section, where you can see what games for different consoles have been selling, and what score they were given from the magazine reviewers. As mentioned before, the Official Release Dates section is handy as it shows you when all the games are to be released, even featuring those due to be released next year! Not always will they have release dates as they would be lies, but as soon as they hear something, it will be shown.
One page always features the 'Next Month' review. It will give you a brief introduction to next month's magazine, including a clue for what your free gift may be, along with clues on reviews for any big upcoming games that are being released. It will also issue you with a date for the release.
Overall, I would say this is the best Nintendo Magazine, but if you like lots of games, not just Nintendo's, then there are other magazines out there that are much better. However, this is one of the cheaper magazines, and the pages smell really nice! They do have a lot of information, mostly useful and reliable and it is a jolly read with the added extras of competitions and more!
Thanks for reading,

Summary: This is the official magazine with the most reliable information and reviews.

Stunt 101 - 04/02/08 Never noticed that my magazines smell nice :P
I think that official magazines are biased, as Offical Xbox 360 Magazine giving Blue Dragon a 9/10 is a little high! |
