... almost like the club that you'll never be quite cool enough to join in their opinion. In a world that's also full of elitist 'indie' kids, it's easy to see why they have an attitude like that, when this is what they read. I find they always have to have the 'controversial' opinion, yet it's always so very predictable, especially when it comes to rating an album. If everyone likes a bands new album, you can be pretty sure they are going to tear it to shreds. Take away the stupid amount of ads and other crap in the magazi...more

Premium Review NME: Gobbledygook for the Masses (894 words)
by - written on 16/02/08 (Very useful, 176 readings)
Rating:

The New Musical Express, as much as it claims to be musically diverse, has always been an 'indie' magazine. Since it first starting appearing on our shelves way back in the fifties it's championed the likes of Sex Pistols, The Smiths and The Libertines, changing along with the music scene which has surrounded it. During the 70's the term 'gonzo journalism' was coined and soon became associated with the NME. The use of humor, quotes, sarcasm, and exaggeration became the NME writing style, and still is today. This manages to set it apart from the crowd. Edging ever closer to the teen-pop weekly format the mag is now fully coloured and glossy print. It's highly advertised ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review NME.... what a great magazine! (608 words)
by - written on 13/08/07 (Useful, 130 readings)
Rating:

I have found the NME magazine to be an extremely useful read over the last few years. I suppose it does contradict the idea of avoiding the main-stream simply by the fact that it is a magazine, although it is unarguably unique. Every issue is full of interviews of bands, both familiar and completely unrecognised, allowing you to make comparisons and judge what you may want to buy next with the reassurance that NME has given it the "thumbs up". Another feature that i love about my wednesday (weekly publication release day) read of NME is that it is all about the music. By this i mean that you wont find the photos and crazy tales of the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review NME: Simply a great mag (274 words)
by - written on 03/01/08 (Useful, 24 readings)
Rating:

One of many music magazines available in newsagents and supermarkets across the land, although this is one of the better ones. The NME which originally started out as a printed newspaper many decades ago has developed to become one of the most popular glossy music magazines available. Partly due to its choice a few years ago to follow mainly "indie" music which has paid off due to its recent flourish of popularity. A typical NME is 70 to 80 pages long and packed with reviews of CD's, DVD's and concerts as well as interviews with bands and solo artists. Another major feature in its success is its large index of upcoming concerts which allows music ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review NME: Like An OBE, Only Cheaper (428 words)
by - written on 08/09/09 (Very useful, 19 readings)
Rating:

The New Musical Express or NME is one of the longest running Music Papers in the UK. I am a sporadic buyer, in that I will buy it if I have the right amount of change on me, or if I like the list of bands or artists who are featured in it that week. What Sort Of Music Does It Cover: The NME has a leaning towards guitar and rock music, so if you're a huge fan of Girls Aloud or Michael Ball, you might be better off looking elsewhere. Examples Of Artists NME Will Feature: Oasis, Artic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, Cribs, Florence and the Machine, Paul Weller, La Roux, Strokes, Reverend and the Makers, Iggy Pop, Patrick Wolf, Hadouken, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review NME at the gates (544 words)
by - written on 22/06/01 (Very useful, 50 readings)
Rating:

Christ, what has happened to the British music press? Back in the glory days of the mid-80s, we had Sounds, NME and the gloriously opinionated journalism of Melody Maker. With Sounds & MM now gone, it's left to NME to carry the torch. Sadly however, it dropped the torch around the same time MM went to the wall, and with no competition it's become horribly complacent. It's hard to know these days which type of reader NME is aimed at. Sadly I don't think it's aimed at a specific type any more, rather it's trying to cover all bases and failing dismally. Its recent jump onto the garage/r&b bandwagon was a shameless attempt to sell more ...  Read the complete review
