Advantages: It was only £2.30 wasted.
Disadvantages: Where do i start?
The New musical express, or more widely known as the NME. A lot of people don't realise just how long this magazine has been running, in fact it's one of the longest running music publications, the first edition being released way back in march 1952. It has always been a somewhat 'alternative' magazine, with it's association with punks back in the seventies and it's slightly, shall we say 'unique' way of writing. It recently got it's first female editor back in september this year, lets see if she can improve it any...
Ah the NME, a magazine that couldn't get any further up it's own arse if it tried. Their claim to be diverse and open minded is almost laughable, as it was all about 'indie' up until recently, then it jumped on the passing rap/RnB/garage band wagon as artists like Jay-z triumphed at Glastonbury, Dizzee rascall abandoned his old sound and it became very cool to like these people.
The NME is extremely elitist, it's almost like the club that you'll never be quite cool enough to join in their opinion. In a world that's also full of elitist 'indie' kids, it's easy to see why they have an attitude like that, when this is what they read. I find they always have to have the 'controversial' opinion, yet it's always so very predictable, especially when it comes to rating an album. If everyone likes a bands new album, you can be pretty sure they are going to tear it to shreds. Take away the stupid amount of ads and other crap in the magazine and you'll be left with about 2 pages of half decent reading material, even then it's full of that rather annoying 'know it all' attitude.
In truth there aren't an awful lot of decent music magazines out there, music is very personal and i'd rather not have someone telling what to think of an album, i'd rather make my own mind up. In a world of internet, it's now so easy to find other ways of accessing music info other than magazines....and who can blame people when music magazines are this bad?
A complete waste of money. The only slightly positive thing i can think of about this magazine is that it does list a lot of tour dates. If you have £2.30 burning a hole in your pocket and are tempted to buy this, throw your money straight in the bin, it's more constructive than buying this garbage.
Summary: Elitist garbage,
