Advantages: Weekly, Appears to be written in English, Gig ads

Disadvantages: Expensive, More Pop Idol than Pulp, The internet is better and FREE!

A few years back I used to find out loads about indie music from a freind. My freind was well up on loads of bands you might have otherwised missed and wasnt the sort to take any notice of pop trends or one hit wonders. Sure, there were one or two times when it might have been style over content but you can live with that, and we got on really well.

Anyway, one day my freind comes in and hes banging on about Robbie Williams. Now, I thought this was a bit odd since my freind had always thought Take That so contemptable he never mentioned them except in jest. At first I thought he was being ironic and so I just humoured him. It turned out I wasnt the only one and there was plenty of debate about it. But my friend came back with a good point, and he asked if I really wanted just to be spoonfed trendy artists like UNKLE or get to know a bit more about slightly more mainstream new stuff - as long as it wasnt manufactured, mind. I couldnt really argue with that, but wasnt quite so trusting.

Sadly, it wasnt to be. Time passed and my freind soon started talking complete b*****ks, telling me I was 'missing out' on the genius of Craig David was the last straw. When I protested he just got all smug and agressive with me saying that it was me that had the problem, this was 2002 and all that, and I had no choice - who was I going to turn to now?

I stopped seeing my freind soon after that and got a subscription to Jockey Slut instead.

I take it that your friend is NME?

In which case, you may have missed the point.

Even in back in the 60's (when I was a regular reader) NME never attempted to be "everything to everyone" - but the previews/reviews and future listings were invaluable...

I long since moved on to specialist publications, - but still have a soft spot for NME...

Please let me know if you re-write, as I will be delighted to re-rate your op.

Lynn

PS Does anyone else think that the Music Cat Guide is a bit po-faced?

- Sorry, Iain, but I only ever wanted to change the world and give my dooyoo earnings to Nanci Griffith's chosen charity!

Interesting, but a little too oblique to be of any great use. It could do with more stuff about your "friend" than just those couple of bits.
IAIN.
