(Newark-on-Trent) Newark Advertiser

Local News with the odd interesting bit!!
The Newark advertiser is the local paper that is based for Newark (on trent) readers.It has all the usual bits that appear in local papers,Births,Marriages and Deaths ....which for some reason we all seem to read and see if we can spot a name we recognise!Human curiosity or downright ... nosyness??!!lol.It has a pretty large section on items for sale normally too,unlike most of the paper this doesnt seem to be available to view online so if you want a bargain you will just have to pay out the 50 odd pence!
Newark is a reasonably small town so as you can imagine a reasonable amount of the paper is clutter of no interest to..well anyone really,unless you're intending to buy a car in which case it has as many local car adds as an add mag!!However there are the odd bits of news and always plenty of pictures!
It does have a couple of interesting sections though.....the readers letters can make for an interesting read and on a couple of occasions a feud has started up from these!There are a couple of pages on the *old days* of Newarks history,these often include old local news and stories broke down into 5o years ago and 100 years ago catagories.Again these often have photo's so you never know who you will see on there...your gran,mum,grandad....all in the prime of the youth!!
I guess for the price of the paper its not too bad,after all...a chocky bar costs as much!But if its a quick browse you want or just a look at the headlines then go to their website and view them on there!Also has local weather and database of previous BMD's on there too aswell as being able to place adds etc.I guess if you're traditional you will buy the paper but if you're broke,want to save the paper to save the world(see how you can put a positive spin on either knicking someone elses copy and not buying your own or just being too tight to pay??!!) then view it online,the difference isnt huge and it will save you the money!

Nottingham Evening Post

The Nottingham Evening Post was established in 1878 and is a local daily newspaper costing 35p. It is available to people in Nottinghamshire and some parts of Derbyshire. You can buy the paper Monday - Saturday.
There are two editions of the paper each day. One is available in the morning/afternoon and then another updated ... edition which is called the late final and is available in the evening.
It covers the local news as well as some national news. It shows a three day outlook on the weather and information about roadworks. There is also a big family announcement section where you can pay to list births/deaths/marriages and a classified section where you can list items for sale and ask for wanted items.
The sport pages are very good and cover local football teams Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Mansfield as well as smaller football teams. Other sports covered are cricket, rugby and ice hockey. The match reports are very good.
They often have coupon collect competitions where you collect tokens from buying the paper a few days in a row and then send them off with a form.
The Evening post website www.thisisnottingham.co.uk lists most of the news that is in the days paper.

(Mansfield) Mansfield Chad

Chad is the weekly local newspaper serving Mansfield and the surrounding area of Nottinghamshire. Published every Wednesday morning the newspaper is very popular and read by the majority of the people of the town. Copies bought in a shop are 42p each, whereas delivered copies are only 32p - the 10p saving is to encourage people ... to have their copy delivered on a regular basis.
Each issue is normally about 100 pages, in a tabloid format. Although most of the paper is black and white there is normally a number of coloured pictures each week and coloured print is used on the front and back pages.
The first about 30 pages contain the main news items of the paper and the last 6 – 8 pages are for the sports news. As I have very little interest in local sport I rarely read the sports pages, but “sporty” people tell me that the articles are comprehensive and well written.
In the news section there are a few pages that are specific to different parts of the town and the surrounding areas giving local community news. On the front cover it states which area each paper relates to. This is fine as long as you have bought your paper in the area you live, however if you buy the paper in a different place it is a little annoying when you don’t see all the news relating to your own area.
The paper has often spearheaded campaigns and usually is very successful in winning these, but I think this is because it only really tackles issues that it stands a very good chance of winning in the first place.
There are 60-70 pages of adverts, the majority of which are for jobs, cars or houses. There are also all the normal classified sections and individuals can place a free advert for items up to the value of £500, all private car adverts are also free. Adverts can be placed in person by calling at the Chad office, by telephone or through the newspapers own website:

One unusual
part of the paper that I don’t particularly like is the obituary section. Here there are some long reports about the deceased person and the funeral arrangements, but what I find disturbing is that a picture of the person accompanies each report. It just seems a bit strange to me.
There is a fairly comprehensive “What’s On” section which also includes reviews of new films or plays in the area. There is also a music review section here. This section of the paper often has 3 or 4 competitions each week with tickets to local events as the prizes.
On the children’s page there are normally a few competitions for the younger readers, The Chadventurers. They also have their own club and birthdays are shown on their page in the paper.
The paper always contains information for residents such as domestic arrangements around holiday times like when the bins are going to be emptied etc.
In my opinion the letters page is a bit staid and often contains long, not too interesting letters, from local politicians. Threads of discussions rarely take place and this is a disappointing part of the paper.
Overall the news coverage is very good and it would be very rare for any major event to happen in the town and not be reported in full by the news team. All the main stories will have photographs with them and the news in nearly always reported in the week it occurs. I have lived in areas before where the local newspapers seem to lag behind events by a couple of weeks, this certainly is not the case with Chad.
If there is a national perspective to a local story this is normally written very well, with the local issues taking priority.
Chad is a good newspaper, which is very well written and edited. If you are visiting or live in the Mansfield area then it is well worth buying this paper every week.
