Advantages: the only real 'fashion' magazine around

Disadvantages: if you need to keep saying you're cutting-edge, you're not

Can the trendiest magazine of the sixties really translate itself to the noughties? I recently bought a 30 year-old copy of Nova (from a fantastic retro shop in Greenwich called Flying Duck if you're interested) - all I can say is that women must have been much more easily pleased then. The only thing that struck me was the main fashion spread, which wouldn't have looked out of place in the February 2001 issue. (All this is not related to my opinion of the new Nova by the way, tis but relevant trivia).

They re-released Nova early in 2000 with a series of TV ads showing groovy young cats throwing eggs at each other. I'm still not sure where they were going with that, but I bought the magazine anyway and wasn't disappointed.

It's important to remember that Nova is principally a fashion magazine, and slightly disregard some of the articles (India Knight, author of 'My Life on a Plate', is a regular columnist and completely infuriating). It's not that it has nothing to say for itself by any means, but it's kinder not to draw attention to it.

It seems desperate to prove that it has all the attitude of the crazy sixties (man). The sad thing is, if it only tried a little less hard I think it would, because it's very stylishly put together.

Nova are the only magazine that is being genuinely experimental with both styling and photography at the moment, and that is what makes it such a refreshing 'read' (well more of a 'look' really). They combine their photos with graphic images, and follow directions with clothes that mags like Vogue wouldn't touch because they'd consider them silly (ie fun or a bit original).

The only thing that worries me about Nova is the number of free cover gifts they have given away so far, which seems like bribery somehow (I think at the root of it, I'm scared it'll turn into Cosmo any day now). Despite my bitching at the writing, it&
#39;s the only magazine I buy every month and really enjoy.

It's not quite Cosmo yet but this month's issue was full of really pointless articles. I wish they would just DO FASHION and not try to be anything else.
