Disadvantages: Still the same old stuff
I remember Nova from the first time round - ok, I remember it fairly vaguely, but you know what they say about the 60's - if you remember it, you weren't really there. Well, anyway, I was there and I do remember this exciting, ground-breaking magazine that actually published articles on the leading edge of public opinion - like articles on abortion. Yes, ok, yawn. But back then I had to lie at the family planning clinic to get the pill. (Yes, I'm engaged to be married, no we can't get married until we've both finishged college, no I don't think we can wait that long). It was a different world, trust me. Maybe that's the problem, there are fewer taboos and we are, in general more sophisticated and possibly a little more liberal. Achieving the shock factor in any magazine is much harder and in a women's magazine virtually impossible - just look at the covers - 'Sex mad son-in-law ate my baby' etc. Well let's start with the cover, none of those boring teasers and special offers - quite refreshing I suppose. The content struck me as very average. Nothing that would be considered too challenging. Same old cosmetics adverts. One thing the old Nova was justly famous for was its photography. The new Nova also has a lot of photographs - but nothing that would actually take your eye out. And finally, as a mag aimed at grown up women - how come the free t-shirt is sized for an anorexic 12 year old?
