Advantages: Pretty Cheap

Disadvantages: Scrutinizes people's appearances, pointless articles

I've just bought a copy of Now magazine, dated 1 Sept 2008. The magazine is priced at £1.20; 'Now' seems to have increased in price recently. It wasn't long ago that a copy was just 95p.

There was a time when I could find myself reading around 10 magazines a week, a ridiculous number when I think back on it. But I always found myself bored, especially on buses and other transport. In the past year I've developed a liking for literature classics, Pride & Prejudice being my favourite novel. I much prefer reading books to magazines now, but I still occasioinally pick up a magazine for some light reading. So today when I was at the local shop I bought this magazine. I don't know why I chose 'Now' magazine. The cover of this issue has Jade Goody on the front and I think I was quite interested to hear her story, wishing all the best for her.

Now Magazine is mainly read by young women/teenage girls. It is always packed with celebrity features and fashion fixes. It isn't my favourite magazine and I was especially disappointed with the current issue. The content is limited and most of the magazine is dedicated to the daily lives of the nations most famous celebrities.

The magazine is divided into 3 sections: Now News, Now Style, and In Every Now. The whole of the Now News section is dull information about celebrities and interesting reads seem rare. Now Style is usually better because at least it is of interest to the readers, unlike the first section which is wrapped up in the distant lives of celebrities. The Style section featutes beauty tips as well as fashion advice. The Now team try out different products and review them, although I must say I would rather log in to dooyoo for product reviews!

I really like the 'In Every Now' section of the magazine. It is really varied and includes information on travelling, health and fitness articles, horoscopes, diet plans and lots more. Very little of this section if focussed on celebrities which is good.

The magazine is a typical young women's read. It contains next to no intelligent articles and is focussed on the press, fashion and celebrities. It isn't really my thing and I doubt I will purchase it again. One article particularly annoyed me. They said that a celebrity looked to have put on weight and criticised her appearance. This celebrity is pictured looking happy and content, the happiest she has appeared in a long time. The magazine shouldn't criticise someone who is happy and healthy. Too many people are suffering from eating disorders and I hate the way magazines scrutinise celebrities bodies. Women can never win - they are either too thin or too fat. When will all this come to an end. If the same celebrity was to drop down to a size 4 the magazine would say she looked unhealthy and ill. Why can't they just accept these celebrities for who they are and stop running them down unnecessarily. No wonder so many women have body issues. I hate magazines that do this as I have had my own problems with my body image in the past, dropping too low in weight because of other ignorant people making rude comments.

I don't plan to purchase Now Magazine again. There are so many different magazines to choose from and there are far better available than this one.

Summary: Not A Great Mag!
