Advantages: ESCAPE FROM REALITY, CATCH UP ON THE GOSSIP
Disadvantages: YOUR OWN LIFE IS BORING IN COMPARISON (BUT THIS IS GOOD)
Women are well known for gossiping. Just call it an inbuilt instinct. You only have to pass shelves in supermarkets and newsagents to see what I mean. There is a huge display of woman?s magazines containing page upon page of celebrity gossip, and there?s nothing I like more than snuggling up in bed first thing in the morning before the kids get up, and pick up the latest copy of Now.
Now magazine has been around for a few years now, and although there is plenty of competition I have to say this is the only magazine I have stayed faithful to. It?s not particularly glitzy, quite simple in design and lay-out, making it just perfect for those times when you want to escape the daily rigours of life, if only for half an hour.
Priced at £1.10, I remember when it was on sale for a measly 50 pence, but just like everything else that gathers a large community of followers, the price rises as quick as the weather changes. Still, not to complain, it?s worth every penny.
So what do you get for your money then? Well, bucket-loads of gossip about the stars for one. Here you find out which celebrities have been up to naughty things, which one wasn?t wearing any knickers at the latest film premiere, or what Jordan has been up to. She features quite heavily in this magazine, you?ll be shocked to hear.
Along the line of celebrity news there are a couple of exclusive in-depth interviews with famous stars. Recently, Cameron from Big Brother (if you can call him a star) laid everything bare in his warts and all interview, also Daryl Hannah is featured so you get quite a good mix of people in there. Plus, the good old public have their chance to grill celebrities. Here you can ask any question you want, the only thing is you can?t see them squirm when asked. Shame!
To go with the gossip there are additional amusing snapshots of stars caught looking awful. This is great if you feel like trash on certain days and you can look heaven bound and th
ank the lord that these people have to work hard at looking good too. Kylie does have cellulite; look there in that photo. Yippee! Again, Jordan is pictured, boobs on display lying in the gutter drunk to the eyeballs. But nothing new there!
Taking us away from the sleaze, there are plenty of pages about fashion and beauty. Here you can copy the style of celebrity icons such as Posh Spice, Sarah Jessica Parker, or Kylie to name but a few. There are plenty of tips on buying their designer outfits cheaper on the High Street, so this gets a big thumbs up from me. Also there are plenty of tips and advice about beauty products, like what?s new on the market, and this season?s must-haves.
For those who like travel there is a two-page special every week featuring a different hot-spot. Each country that?s featured has a big write-up about what to do, where to go, and places to avoid. Great advice for the discerning traveller.
Closer to home, real readers get to tell their stories about real-life experiences, such as surviving a shark attack, re-living their stalking nightmare, to being raped. These reports sometimes make harrowing reading, and you wonder how they can bear all in their interviews. After reading these stories, you are left feeling that you have nothing really to complain about.
Other regular slots are the ?Right Here, Right Now? pages. These make excellent reading as this gives the reader first-hand accounts of what certain celebrities have been up to in the world of stardom. Also there are tit-bits of saucy secrets, little hints are given away, but the name is never revealed leaving you to wonder who they are talking about.
Every week there are film reviews so that you can read about new releases before trundling along to cinema. There is always a big review on one of the big films, here you can read about behind the scenes gossip, and find out more about the cast. Following on from films, you can read about upcom
ing storylines in soapland. I like these the best.
Then come the big belly laughs. The following pages take us to the latest celebrity bashes. Here you see the celebrities in a what not to wear line up. Some of them look hideous and think they look the bee?s knees. All to get their picture in the paper I think. Still, it?s worth a laugh.
As with other women?s mags you get the typical cocktail of Zodiac Stars, fashion pages, prize crossword and the ever-helpful Agony Aunt Caroline is there to offer sound advice on any problems you have. Here readers get to voice their concerns about their failing relationships or other woes in their lives.
Ok, all in all there?s nothing different here that you wouldn?t find in any other magazine, apart from there being far less pages of adverts, yippee! That?s just a waste of paper. I guess, for me it?s a hard habit to break and I have just got used to picking up a copy every week and chucking it in my basket. I am always kept entertained by reading this mag and it always gives me plenty to talk about with my friends. IT beats doing the housework.
