Advantages: Great balanced reviews, Up to date news and previews, Good standard DVD with every copy

Disadvantages: Bit pricey for some, Some features don't belong

Ah, what a refreshing change. The Official Playstation 2 Magazine is exactly that - official. Where in other cases, this means all games released by the company behind the console recieve high ratings no matter the quality due to the influence of the suits, this monthly publication is anything but corrupt in its reviewing policy.

No, the brighter side of being an official magazine is reflected with this mag - for example all the important news about the console in question exclusively from the horse's mouth, they're the first to recieve demo copies of the big games to bring in-depth previews, and of course all the best games are given the go-ahead to feature on the DVD they give away with the magazine every month.

The DVD, in fact, is one of the major strengths of this particular publication. Whereas other PS2 mags offer watchable demos of certain games, the Official Magazine has playable levels as well as the usual watchable previews.

Reviews are well reasoned, with very few games indeed receiving a high bracket mark, which is a more realistic way of marking games - after all it's not all that often that something truly special comes on the market, and it's worth reserving top marks for when such an occaision arises.

There are extended interviews with software houses, impressive previews, extremely helpful technical sections for those interested in that side of things, superb competitions - this magazine is truly a good read.

It's not all great - some sections are annoying, such as the "design your own game" feature for example, which really belongs in a magazine aimed at a younger audience. However, these are minor quibbles, and when it comes to the crunch, if you're looking for a feature packed magazine with fair and balanced reviews everything Playstation 2 related, you could do much worse than chuck a fiver at your newsagent every month in exchange for the Official Playstation 2 Mag
azine.
