Advantages: some juicy gossip
Disadvantages: too many advertisments
As I am off work for a couple of weeks I decided to buy a magazine to read during my mid morning coffee break. I decided that OK looked a good choice as it contains all showbiz gossip and the December 13 issue number 294 really caught my eye because the front cover was of Fiona Phillips with her husband and son Nathanial. I have always admired this down to earth lady and wanted to find out more about her. The magazine cost me £1.95 and comes out every week. I think the price is quite reasonable considering it contains 146 pages although don’t be fooled into thinking it is jam-packed with gossip its not. At least 45 of the pages were advertisments ranging from videos to cosmetic surgery. Contents on offer:- VH1 Music Awards, this was just two full pages of pictures and a small piece of writing on the awards. Not bad if you are just interested in looking at pictures. I learned to read at an early age so I did buy the magazine for the purpose of reading some interesting gossip and not really admiring the contents of some celebrity wardrobes, especially as they only ever wear the outfit once. Also on offer is a couple pages spread of Samantha Mumba the Irish pop princess out celebrating World Aids Day at the top London club G-A-Y. On the gossip front is an interesting piece on Kate Winslet with her new love Sam Mendes and on first impressions of him I think she had better at home!! If you are a Cold Feet fan like I am there is a big section showing them Down Under finishing off their current series where Pete marries his girlfriend Jo. My favourite piece is the in-depth interview with Fiona Phillips. OK asked many questions and she answers them will sincere honesty and you can tell she is not caught up in her celebrity status. Other items, which will offer a good, read are:- Only Fools and Horses Hollywood Gossip Farewell George Harrison Emma Bunton
in OZ Britain’s Top Ten Celebrity Homes Hollyoaks Pyjama Party Fashion – Paul Smith Food, recipes with Shelagh Mcleod Beauty with Heidi Klum Body and Soul – Healthy Heart Travel; with also includes a great competition to win a holiday in St Lucia. Horoscopes and Celebrity Diary. Crossword Children’s Baftas OK Diary Celebrity news round-up. As you can see from the above list there is ample to choose from and I am currently working my way through the magazine. My overall opinion is that it’s fairly good value for money with plenty of choice of items to look at. Ideal if you are travelling by train to work etc. as there are so many pictures in there that you need very little concentration to view it. The downside is the writing and stories, there is very little to read, the stories are broken down into very small sections so they may appear over a few pages but if you put all the writing together you would struggle to make up a full A4 piece of writing. The magazine also contained a pullout free time magazine over 6o pages of television listings and I think this fooled me into thinking that the magazine was jam packed with juicy gossip. Like most magazines it’s full of advertisments and with every page you turn you are greeted with another spot cream or for surgery of every kind. I understand that this is essential funding for them but maybe OK have got a little over the top here. Another point to make is that for £1.95 the price they charge it would be better if it came out fortnightly.

- 11/12/01 Us blokes tend to scorn this type of mag, Dentists' waiting rooms would be all the more dull without them though! Good for those who like this sort of thing.
Good op, Boon :) |

- 10/12/01 I have to say that I dislike this genre of "journalism". I feel that nothing is really served by this type of gossip mag and that people's lives are intruded upon. Yes some of them ask for it. A good review nonetheless.
I do not normally do this, but if you want a better explanation of why I dislike this type of press, read my David Lodge, Home Truths review. |
