The Sun
by 12jane
The Sun is a daily newspaper that divides the population. Some love it and some hate it with a passion.
Personally I quite like The Sun, as it is the newspaper we have always had at home. It is one of the cheapest papers at only 30p during the week. The sun is well known for the topless girls on page 3, which if you dont want ... to see, its easy to just skip past that page..
The Sun is owned by Rupert Murdoch, and has been around since 1964. They have recently been in trouble with the phone-hacking scandal, which was when their sister paper, the News of the World was closed down. This has now been replaced by the Sun on Sunday. The paper has a different layout for each day, thought they are similar, for example certain columnists write on Saturdays etc. Jeremy Clarkson is one such columnist, who's column is very funny but not for the easily offended!
The Sun regularly has money off vouchers, often worth more than the paper cost, like a free bar of chocolate or box of eggs. These are not usually available from the small shops in my rural area though so we miss these more often than not.
There is the yearly offer for £9.50 holidays, where you save vouchers from the paper and send them off to get a holiday for only £9.50 per person, and hopefully get your first choice of destination. My family have been on several of these and they are great. There are hundreds of destinations, in the UK and several in the EU now.
The Sun does have a lot of celebrity gossip, and lots of photos compared to other newspapers, but it makes nice easy light reading. There can be a lack of information on world news, but generally I find there is enough, and if I want to find out more I can look online/turn the TV on.
Although I do not read the sports section, there is quite a bit of sports either in the central pull-out or at the back of the paper. There is a variety of sports information, to suit all.
The Sun often runs petitions, such as when Baby P was in the news, they petitioned to get his social workers sacked.
The Sun has a free TV guide on Saturdays and a Magazine on Sundays, both of which are a good read, but are aimed at women as opposed to men I think. The Sunday magazine - Fabulous, has a lot of fashion, cosmetics and celebrity gossip. There are also some crosswords, word searches etc.
Overall I award 4/5 stars, as The Sun is cheap, but not always trustworthy. If you want to read proper news and not a load of gossip about reality tv stars, you will prefer a paper like the Independent. Read the complete review |

The Sun

I have been buying The Sun newspaper every day before work for the last 7 years and I am a big fan. I have seen alot of negative reviews about The Sun, saying its very biased and theres too much nudity and poor 'cheesy' headlines. The newspaper may be for a certain audience but I believe theres around 7 million people that read The Sun, ... surely there is something good about it. Isnt a newspaper about giving your opinion whether the views do favour certain people or not? The nudity issue, everybody knows about Page 3 and peopel dont have to look at it. The paper may be aimed more at males, i can see that, page 3, sexy celebs and the sports coverage - which is fantastic. I will go into abit more detail below.
---Newspaper ---
Front page/headlines: This is how papers are sold, unless you are a regular buyer of the paper. The Sun usually does have something on the front page that grabs your attention. They also do alot of good offers which are displayed on the front page, such as, holidays for £9.50 and a free toy etc. Yes some headlines are cheesy but arent all papers?!!
Page 3: This is obviously for the adult reader and mainly the men out there. I believe that Page 3 has done well to get rid of its 'perverted image' and has become a respected part of the paper. The girls are not degraded and the competition The Sun run - Page 3 idol offers a great opportunity to aspiring models.
Sport: I think this is a key part of this newspaper. The sports coverage in The Sun is brilliant, especially if your a football fan (who isnt?). The back 8-10 pages are usually filled with sports news and stories and there is also a good pullout called 'Goals' which The Sun does, covering all the latest football matches. The Sun also have some decent columnists such as Ian Wright and Alan Shearer, who are usually a good read. There is also section for tip of the day for anybody who enjoys a bet.
Dear Deidre: Dear deidre is an advice page. Offering advice on relationships, sex, marriage, debt, depression and many more important issues.
Bizzare: These pages are full of the latest celebrity news and gossip and also include the latest chart updates etc.
TV BIZ: This is a pullout which focuses on all the latest television gossip.
Sun Woman: As a man i usually do skip this page unless there is a good story on the page. This page has alot of tips for women, usually on the topics of food, exercise, diets and other things women are interested in :)
Sun Letters: Here is the opportunity to have your say. You can email, text or write in with your views and the best letter of the day is awarded a £50 reward.
Rest of the paper: The rest of the paper includes the latest weather, latest lottery numbers, politics news at the start. Then the paper has all the latest national and international news and great exclusives. There is also a Tv Guide for that day, close to the middle of the paper. At the weekend there is plenty of other pullouts for people to enjoy.
---Website---
I read the newspaper mainly but the website is very good. It is laid out well and all the categories of the website are detailed quite clearly. Online you have access to alot more than you do in the paper and you can look at previous stories and articles etc.
The Sun also has an app that can be downloaded via the app store. Read the complete review |

The Sun

I have long heard people talking about the Sun and how its very easy to understand, and doesn't get into politics like house of lords reforms or the heavy going stuff like The Daily Telegraph covers (A very good paper that i usually enjoy) so i thought right, this does not sound like a paper i'd enjoy but i'll give it a chance. I was ... pretty much disgusted by the lack of actual news and the very child like text and stories.
At my local newsagents i recently saw most newspapers with the front cover covering a story about Greece and their financial crisis. Riots had broken out and people injured. I glanced across and saw the Sun actually had a front page story about Cheryl Cole getting divorced from Ashley Cole. I thought what on earth were they thinking? It's a disgrace when you see a story about dead soldiers on the cover of most papers and then one of these magazine like newspapers does a celeb gossip story, i am truly disgusted.
Upon opening the Sun i found absolutely no intelligent stories about government, finances or anything to do with current affairs. there were a few stories about unemployment about 6 pages in after some adverts and yet more celeb gossip.
I'm sorry but i have enough going on in my own life not to care about Wayne Rooney swearing in a game of football or who's marrying who. The reading age of the sun is 8 the last time i checked and the text is certainly reflective of that. There is a very simplistic writing style, no big words or challenging explanations. The pictures a big, the titles cover a large proportion of the page and the text that is on the page is mostly gossipy drivel that i simply can't bare to read.
The newspaper really doesn't have any actual news that's worth reading. The sports section is very dumbed down and does not get into the nitty gritty tactical side of football like most other newspapers do. Instead i found a few quotes from managers and lots of information about them, and their team captains which i dont need to know about. I want to know what the fans were like during a game, how they reacted and were they supportive enough, maybe a bit of info about the less watched sports like golf ? I found absolutely none of that either.
This is a nonsense paper. I would prefer to read "Where's Wally?" Read the complete review |
