Advantages: Informative, well-designed

Disadvantages: Geeky, increasingly games orientated

PC Format has to be one of the, if not the most popular PC magazine on sale in the UK at the moment. It certainly offers value for money. Your £5 gets you a thick glossy mag, well designed, and generally smart and attractive. Perhaps a benefit of buying this magazine is also a disadvantage - it's huge scope. This magazine tries to cover nearly all elements of PC using - games, DVD, internet, office applications, software, hardware etc etc. While this means that there's bound to be something that takes your interest, it surely also means there's a lot that won't. It has an excellent news section, bringing you up-to-date with recent PC innovations - unfortunately being a business has meant they're aiming towards what will earn them a greater readship - and at the moment that seems to be games. They recently gave the magazine a motto: 'PC Entertainment magazine' in an effort to explain this increasing occupation in the games - if you like games, great - but if you'd hoped PC Format would avoid becoming like any other gaming magazine you'll be increasingly disappointed. This magazine also has a really awkward 'geeky' nature. Firstly, every edition has a female model on the cover - never anything to do with the magazines contents, which gives the impression that it was designed by a bunch of sex depraved work experience adolescents. The humour is a little adolescent as well. However - the whole mag is well put together, and almost always very informative, with some great programs often available on the disk - so if it's the free CD or DVD, the news inside, or the picture of a semi-naked lady on the cover, there's bound to be a reason why you'll get this magazine at some point in your PC-using life!
