Advantages: Subscription saves you a small fortune, free disc with every issue!

Disadvantages: Buying issues individually can be expensive

Whilst I do play quite a lot of games, I wouldn't really describe myself as a hard core gamer and ordinarily wouldn't read any gaming magazines, preferring instead just to look on websites if I want to read a review on a game.

My boyfriend, on the other hand is an avid reader of PC Gamer and I recently treated him to a years subscription of the monthly magazine which at a cost of £52 works out at about £4 an issue, I believe you are saving almost £2 off every copy. My boyfriend also received his copy 2 days before they were in the shops, so he was very pleased with this!

You get a free disc with every issue and this is usually packed with free demos of the latest games, free mods for some of the more popular games and even full free games that have been designed by independant game makers.

The magazine itself does seem more aimed towards typical male gamers, the featured games are very often shooting games featuring various monsters and lots of blood and big guns - not really my type of game.

To be fair PC Gamer really does try to cater to everyone and you will find smaller articles on all types of games from the latest football game to the cutesy kids game featuring the latest Disney Hero.

It is the style of writing that really stands out though - PC Gamer is a fun read, even if you aren't really into games it's worth a flick through as the writers they hire are actually very funny, whilst still being informative.

The readers letters are usually worth a glance, if only to chuckle at some of the people that write in... think 'Dear Deirdre' but about games...! The Spy does a regular column and his articles are usually very well written and funny.

But really, the best part of the magazine is the previews on games that have yet to be released and the reviews on games that are already out. There are always fantastic reviews, littered with high quality photos of actual game content and more than once I have tried a game I wouldn't normally play purely based on the review in PC Gamer.

I wouldn't recommend this magazine to everyone, clearly if you aren't interested in games at all then this wouldn't be for you. But if you are a gamer, hard core or not then this is definately worth a read... and if you do like it then I would strongly suggest getting a subscription as you save a fair bit of money and they even give you a free gift! Can't say fairer than that!

Summary: Nice idea for a christmas pressie if you know an avid gamer....
