Advantages: Can read it whilst on the toilet

Disadvantages: Not as good as it used to be, that's nostalgia for you

I don't buy PC Gamer any more, but for most of my formative years it was my favourite magazine. It has gone downhill in recent years, though I can't comment fully as I haven't read it in a while.

Not only was PC Gamer a great source of gaming knowledge, full of fantastic reviews, funny features, competitions, and other stuff, but it helped shape the person that I am today. I read it religiously from cover to cover for well over 100 issues; it inspired me, it made me laugh, it made me cry. It felt like it was made with love by a real tight-knit team of PC gamers, including the likes of Jim Rossignol, Kieron Gillen, John Walker, plus loads more. I dunno if they still write for it or not. They probably do freelance or something.

PC Gamer was good because you felt like you were a part of it. It richly rewarded its readership with in-jokes and the like. It was like a little community.

The cover disk was also useful in the days of 56k internet and even in the dark days before I had that.

Summary: Better than most other PC gaming mags, though PC Zone is also good
