Advantages: Great Reviews, Funny
Disadvantages: Small Hardware Section, Expensive, Rarely has full programs compared to other computing magazines
PC Gamer is my favourite magazine. It is monthly and costs £4.99, which is a lot for a magazine, but it is big with lots of reading time. It is very informative with lengthy reviews of up to 6 pages for good games. It normally has about 30 pages of reviews with about 20 games reviewed in each issue. It also has a budget re-releases pages with short 1-column reviews for games recently put at budget prices. It has a ‘Scoop!’ section that has 2 page previews of games in production and ‘Eyewitness’ section for smaller previews and recent news of the gaming world. The ‘Previews’ section has more detailed previews of games that will be released in 2 or 3 months. The ‘Hardware’ section gives advice on which hardware and technical programs to buy. It also has advice for troubleshooting letters. The Internet section has news on on-line games, websites and reviews of ‘Mods’ for games (Usually F.P.Ss). There is a ‘Tips’ section with walkthroughs, cheats, strategies and tips for recent games. It also has ‘Q&A’ where it answers people’s questions on games. The letters section is funny when you have read the magazine for several months as most of the letters are from ‘cult’ followers who complain (and sometimes praise) the games industry and the PC Gamer writers (Especially Kieron). It also has ‘Uncensored’ with reader’s reviews of recent games. The 2 CDs (or 1 DVD) have lots of game demos and the latest patches for many games. They also have about 1300 reviews from past issues and 600 ‘Tips’ (walkthroughs/cheats). They don’t often have full programs unlike some computing magazines though. There are 3 main types of computer magazines. There are ones like ‘Computer Shopper’ or ‘Computer Buyer’ that concentrate on reviews of hardware and computers. There are ones like PC Format
(made by the same company as PC Gamer) who have a mixture of hardware and games. But if it’s just games you’re interested in then PC Gamer is definitely the magazine for you.

- 29/09/01 I haven't bought a games magazine in a long time, I seem to be able to get just as much information from the internet for free so I don't see the point of paying so much for a magazine. |
