Advantages: 2 CD's, good range of articles

Disadvantages: Just not as good as the competition

PC Gear is trying to hit a middle ground between a PC games magazine, a lads magazine (a la Maxim/FHM) and shiny technology magazine (TTT/Stuff for Men). Often it suceeds, with very good round ups of the latest technology and gadgets, good reviews of serious software products and a round up of the better game son the market.

Where it fails is in the filler. Several pages which are just web site listings is dull. I do not need a top 5 disaster movie sites, or top 5 sites dedicated to children's TV in the 1980's. If I want such things, I'll find it on the web. it'd be okay if there was just one or two of these filler features, but there's too much.

The magazine also comes with 2 cover CD's. One of game demo's and one of more serious software. The game demo's are pretty good, ranging from 3d shoot em ups to racing games to god games. I was disappointed though that they had repeated the same game two months in a row (with Delta Force: Land Warrior).

The serious software is mostly chaff-ware. Tools that have been written by commercial companies that just aren't flexible enough or good enough to be the market leaders. That said, a couple, like Music Match Jukebox have fund there ways on to my machine permantly.

All in all, it's an okay computer magazine for people who don't want JUST a computer magazine. There's definitely things that do each of the areas better than PC Gear, but no-one does it in one place. Is it all needed in one place? You decide.
