Advantages: breadth of coverage, editorial quality
Disadvantages: cover disk content
I've been a long term subscriber to this magazine since mid 1980's, so maybe I'm a little biased.... PCW covers a wide range of hardware and software from wristwatch computing all the way to the latest ASCI supercomputer. It's this breadth of coverage that I find useful, after all there is more to "Personal" computing than Windows/Intel PC's I also give it high marks for being able to appeal to a wide range of technical abilities, without being boring or patronising. It's just as suitable to the geek as the hardcore business types, managing to carry content suitable to both. In the past couple of years there was a 'problem' with shrinking editorial content and a corresponding increase in advertising. Thankfully these days the editorial to advert ratio is much more favourable. However, this does lead to a more slimline volume, rather than the doorstop I was used to in the mid 90's. Never a big fan of coverdisks, the PCW one is okay, concentrating on mainly business and utility applications, with a very small smattering of game demos. All in all I can't see anything about it, (apart from a price rise), that would cause me not to renew my subscription.
