Advantages: Thorough, technical, free to members

Disadvantages: Difficult for most to understand, limited appeal

Planning magazine is published weekly by the RTPI. The magazine is free to members of the RTPI, however costs £2.60 in the shop. The magazine is published weekly. Planning magazine has now been published for over 30 years, and is well established.

Planning magazine has around 30 pages devoted to planning issues, followed by a couple of pages of consultancy adverts, then the back of the magazine are the job adverts. I use these job adverts as a barometer of the economy. When I started receiving the magazine in summer 2007, the jobs took up a similar number of pages to the planning issues section, around 20-30 pages per week. This week, in February 2009 there were 3 pages.

Planning magazine deals solely with issues relating to town planning, and as such is appeals to an extremely limited group of readers. The magazine features important appeals, regeneration news, environmental and sustainable developments, interviews with prominent politicians and regeneration professionals, and analysis of new supplementary planning documents or area action plans. The most interesting section to me is the Development Control Casebook, which examines important national cases, enforcements, decisions, appeals and listed building cases. There is also a question and answer section, where planners can get their professional queries answered.

Summary: Excellent professional publication
