Play is a 100% unofficial magazine which reviews, tests and basically comments on videogames on playstation 2, 3 and PSP. It's still going today and retails at 4.99 so is cheaper than the official magazine. There are in all 13 magazines released each year, one each month and a special christmas edition. The magazine normally comes with a DVD disc containing information on the latest games coming to console.
The mag is reviewed by a team with their own opinions so you know that their scores are not biased etc. There are roughly 120 pages in each mag and would take a few days to completely read etc. It's my favorite out of all the mags on the market as reviews are easy to read, funny, has loads of exclusives, is cheaper, great screen shots and some cheats, guides in the back. Most of the magazine these days concentrates on ps3 releases now, with ps2 and psp making up only around 20% of content.
So not much else to say really, buy an issue, you may love it, just a matter of opinion really.
I've reviewed the official magazine and now it is the unnoficial ones turn-I got this magazine way back-because it was first out when the PSone was king of the consoles, and 138 issues later, i am still impressed. I'm not a constant reader and i certainly do not have a subscription to it, but have flicked between getting it and not every month, but this month it caught my eye because it was none other than he revolutionary Playstation 3 that posed for the front page.
About the Magazine.
A very good magazine, with good being an understatement because it is wonderful. It is the unnoficial guide for all SONY consoles, and that is the PSP, PS3 and PS2. It is crammed full of both reviews and previews of games, along with a bunch of other information. I have on my lap, not only this beautiful laptop, but also issue 138 of this magazine and it also has this extra information-countdown to PS3 (it's already lodged into my head), letters, news (on sony consoles etc.), cheats & tips and retro play. Come take a look in my mag.
Reviews-I have read the majority and i think that they are pretty good. The lengthier ones that spread over 4 pages (including pictures-a lot of them) are the best because they are the model review. It has the information that you need on the game, including price and % mark and it fits in well. It has a nice balance between information, opinion and humour. I would like to do the same in my review but humour in a review, i think, is hard to input because you need it to flow naturally and make it not feel forced. (A comparison between friends and Joey then, eh?). See, it's an accomplishment for me to do. Play though, have also done it oh so good. Now let us skip to the shorter reviews. They have a lot of opinion, a bit too much opinions personally because it doesn't say enough about the game. The review that i have read, just a page long, seemed not to tell much about the story because it was such a famous game. However, many reviews on dooyoo have just opinion, and i like them so i still think that it works because after reading it, i realised that i had acquired some decent knowledge.
What i like about this too, it that it reviews Japanese Imports too, so it is a review of a game that is nowhere near the shelves of any store over England.
Previews-Very short here, or atleast between short to medium length but they still have the information because it tells you a little about the story of the game, when it is out, what is expected and what has been confirmed. It is little, but tells us so much. I also think that this works because it isalls that you need to know before the actual review.
Both of them also have great pictures with some little captions by the side of them too-if a little sarcastic-and humorous. I think though, that the pictures do take up a lot of the mag though.
Countdown to PS3-i'll go on about this because it is now a regular. It shows us some pictures and pretty interesting interviews with people connected and in this edition-a timeline of PS3 information, what the PS3 will do that makesthe 360 incompetent. It also shows us games that have lasted through the consoles and changes and what i find it funny. Since the playstaion 3will have a different banana shaped conotroller-they've drawn the buttons on a banana to check out.
Although this is not the real thing, this is because it is top secret and ot a final design. usually, they do get a lot of games etc. before the release which does give us the information which i think is good.
News-Just interesting news and interesting being the word. I like it because the news is really interesting. It speculates on new games, long awaited games and information of blu-raydiscs and the future. This one also has a pie chart showing stats on the percentage of people that own a PS2, PSP and PS1. Nore cheekily though, Xbox and XBox 360 are also added. Wonder which comes out nearest to the bottom then?
I say this is interesting because although i use the word 'specualte', a lot of it is confirmed news, or just nice information that i ike to know.
PLAY investigates-Another great one because once again the word 'speculation' comes up. This mag contains GTA:PS3-a look into how they'd like it. Complete crap for proper information but it is really funny and interestingto hear (or read) someone elses opinions. With it is also rumours.
Letters-i can't really explain what this is about because it is self-explanatory. people write in to go on a rant about opposing consoles, go on about games they like or are waiting for, or like one person-rant on about how they fancy a fictional character. Sad really because the person is fictional, and it is not Lara Croft. This is another joke though because it is fictional. Again, always a good read due to the sarcy responses and letters.
Tips & Cheats-Self Explanatory again and only good if you have the new games.
Playback-get it? It's called that because it is Retroplay-so basicaly what the hype was 3 years ago. Nice to read what was and wasn't good and what they thought was good etc. so another good addition.
Backpage-a free game with every issue. This one is Metal Gear Solid. A snakes and ladders Metal Gear Solid and although i doubt many cut out and play them, i laughed when isaw it and you never know-if Ja & Daxter crops up, i might be the only saddo with the scissors ready.
The Free Stuff!
Always an unplayable demo with footage of playstation portable, 2 and 3 games. It is fun if you are waiting for a game on the demo but i don't usually put it on. It shows the introduction to a few games and quite often-games when they are actually being played. It gives you some good insight. If you watch it, it is worth the money, but it's no loss if you don't watch it. I think it would be better if it was playable, but oh well.
Occasionally you also goet a cheat book with all of the cheats of a lot of games in, so there we go. If you get this in it, it really is a bargain.
Well that is the actual magazine and i think i have explained how good it actually is.
It has an RRP price of £3.99 but in gamestaton this beauty of a mag set me back only £3.20.
Subscription is also available with a 21% save. It is £18.98 every six months (£40.99 a year for 13 issues).
It varies from 130-150 pages long. The maazine i have is 130 pages and is the first in a while i think because it was recently revamped.
The magazine also includes release information for games on all sony consoles including the PS3.
I think that is a great magazine which is really cheap considering it's content. Not only does it include all of the information that you will need.
It is released monthly (or about every 28 days so it is 13 issues a year) and for this, it keeps you updated with a lot of news. although it has some faults such as lack of information, most of the time, which is about 99% of the time, thereviews and previews contain all of the information and humour that is necessary to make it such a wonderful magazine. The added features also make it a better magazine, and since the mag is such a reasonable price, it really will not bother you if you do not find it useful. Also, aside from the reviews and previews, the magazine has other good features. I think that they pick some funny letters which are guaranteed to make you laugh and the rest, if not necessary, will also give you a bit of a giggle because it really is funny, if not necessary. Some of it gives you nice information too which, if your friend owns an opposing console, lets you brag, and the other news, atleast in my opinions, is useful because i like to keep updated on my PS3 information.
Altogether i think that it is really quite essential and i buy this and the officvial magazine because they give two different points of view. This magazine tends to be a bit harsher and give less 90%+ ratings, which some people may prefer. Myself, i am not bothered but if you like your playstation and like the sound of this magazine, it certainly is a bargain.
God knows how this works out but i think that it is easily as good as the official, so i don't know why this has got 4 stars and the official got 5. Go figure.
Thanks for the read-butters.
You may be wondering why it is the best mag, well first of all I used to collect it a couple of years ago, then I looked at other mags. But, I bought the latest issue in the shop and it was amazing. First it now doesn't waste pages and pages on PSone games (in the back)it just tells you the top 100 for both PSone and PS2. Next, it has the odd 1 0r 2 PSone review which is good because I like to read how the PSone is doing now-e-days. This mag not only has lots of previews, reviews, news, global, DVD, other mags, internet sites and over 140 pages, but it comes with books, guides and CD's. I think that this is good because sometimes the DVD's are pretty boring and there is only one magazine that does playable demos (Official Playstation 2 Magazine) and there are only 5 of them, also they are old and there are only 1 or 2 new ones. So I recomend this magazine to anyone, it is fun to read and the pages are paked with pics and GREAT reviews. Excellent
I bought Issue 82 for one reason mainly. It had reviews on Grand Theft Auto III. On the front, was a CD which I thought was a demo, so I decided to buy it. After however I found out it was just danse music and that the magazine misled me by not stating this. This I find annoying, because if I had known it was music, I could have saved £3.20! Also the content was poor too! Half the pages, were advertising a load of rubbish, nothing to do with my interests, let alone the Playstation and the others articles didn't interest me at all. I enjoy driving games, but all the games were shoot'em ups like Max Payne and Project Eden. What I also found very annoying, was the fact that I bought a Playstation magazine, and inside were reviews on PS2 games! Rubbish! Waste of money!
If you're a gamer with a Playstation then this is the best magazine for you. PLAY offers everything all magazines offer as well as a lot more. PLAY has lots of detailed Reviews of games in every issue including screenshots and ratings. As well as this a great feature of PLAY is the preview section with Previews of all the top games to hit the UK in the next couple of months. The previews offer not only screenshots and written details to inform you about the game, but long informative paragraphs about its features. PLAY has a section devoted to PLaystation 2 for any gamer who is looking to buy the newest console on the market. This section has information and pictures about the consile itself and all its games. At the back of the magazine there is a list of the hundreds of Playstation game including the Type of Game, the rating and a short description of the game. If you have a Playstation and you want information about the console and its games, buy PLAY magazine. You won't regret it.
When I'm looking to buy a Playstation magazine, this is always the one I look for. It offers excellent reviews on every game released, and the reviews are written in and informative but humorous style. They obviously know what they are talking about. There is a good tips section too, and at the back there is a full list of PSX games (over 800 in total) with a score and one-line comment, so if you are buying an old game, you can check if it is any good. There is also an ever-growing section devoted to Playstation 2, reviewing and previewing the hottest titles. At £2.99 this is a great bargain and a great magazine.
PLAY is a great magazine which has excellent reviews on Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 games. The writers of the magazine are not afraid to give an honest opinion about any subject. In every issue there are over 800 games which are rated by the magazine writers. Some of the best features regarding the reviews is that they give you details, such as how many players there can be, if the game can be saved, if duel shock is available and lots more. Each issue of the magazine is less than 200 pages, but there is no free CD. With most issues there is something free like a cheat book. The previews give you lots of facts about the games and you then wait in anticipation for the reviews to come out. The magazine also has game charts and the readers most wanted games. One of the down sides is that the magazine contains a lot of adverts and though some are okay most of them do not seem very interesting.
