Pregnancy and Birth

I am quite a magazine fan and I generally read Grazia or OK but since becoming pregnant I have gone straight past the fashion pages and bought a few copies of Pregnancy and Birth. It is described as the UK's number 1 pregnancy magazine so this is what made me choose this above the other magazines that were on offer, that and you also got a catalogue from JoJo Maman Bebe free with the episode.

The magazine comes out monthly and costs £2.70 which is not too pricey in my opinion, especially for a monthly magazine. From looking at the front cover you will see that it has a pregnant model on the front but what is nice is that it's not always a celebrity, just real women.

The magazine is about 150 pages long which is quite a good length in my opinion. It generally follows the same type of pattern as most celebrity magazines, ie has the same advertising and features formula. They do feature some articles with famous celebrity mums which are always quite fun to read and probably sell the magazines too as this is what a lot of people want to read about.

Then, there are quite a few pages dedicated to cosmetics, shower gels, bath bits etc that will work for both mum and baby. It's nice to see different ranges that you are not aware of until you actually become pregnant such as Johnsons, Organic Baby etc. I was not aware of some of these before so this magazine definitely teaches you something new.

I still like my fashion so there are some great fashion pages with all the latest maternity ranges, giving you all the looks for all of your trimesters. Some feature quite scary looking trousers and massive shirts but I guess I will have to get used to that.

Each month they feature a column by a pregnant lady, following her pregnancy through all the stages which is nice to read and compare it to how you feel. There are also lots of real life stories which I really like, this month one of them focused on women giving birth abroad and another article comparing some women's pregnancies to those of celebrity mums.

There's still a problem page but instead of the usual my sister slept with my boyfriend queries they ask questions such as can I still do exercise, what can I do about going back to work, etc, valuable information that is good to know and may relate to your situation.

The adverts in this magazine are relevant, most of them are for products you will need and use such as Bio-oil, push-chairs, kids toys websites, etc and can again introduce you to things that you weren't aware of before.

I heard in the news the other week that pregnancy magazines have been blamed for giving women an idealised view of pregnancy and making them think that having a baby is a breeze and that they should want it all and be able to have it all. I think these magazines do give you a nice view of things and show you and tell you about things that would be nice but I don't necessarily think that they are corrupting our minds and lulling us into a false sense of security or anything like that.

All in all, I would say, if you're looking for a good pregnancy magazine to give you some great tips and information then this is the magazine for you.

I loved reading this through my pregnancies although you do find that the same articles keep coming up in each issue (for obvious reasons!)
