Advantages: Craft ideas, Food ideas, Dressmaking paterns
Disadvantages: Horoscope
When I first came across Prima in the 1980's it was a new type of magazine. It was very thick and full of crafty ideas. Since the 1980's it has changed very little, it is not as fat as it used to be but it is still filled with ideas. At first glance you may think that this is a magazine like many other woman’s magazines. When you open it up you will find lots of fashion pages these fashions are not aimed at teenagers but people like me. There is the obligatory horoscope, in my opinion a waste of space but not everyone thinks like me. Life style articles about real people and their lives, what it is like living with a teacher, policeman or maybe a dying spouse. There are always people’s lives to find out about. Health issues are covered with particular reference to women and their families. Children’s disorders are looked at and how to cope with their behaviour. Do not forget the makeovers they can do great things with clothes that I can not afford! Celebrity interviews, advice pages all the standard candidates for a woman’s magazine are there. What makes this magazine different is the craft and cookery pages. I know other magazines do have craft ideas and recipes but this one has more than most and some of them I might even try. All types of crafts are covered woodwork, knitting, crocheting, appliqué, dying, paper mashie and dress making. Some issues particularly near holidays will have special ideas for children to make. They have even started a section on hints about repairing clothes. The one thing, which makes this magazine worth the price, is the pattern pieces. You get clothes patterns, often dresses I have regularly used them for my clothes and those of my children. There are regularly wedding clothes, my daughters bridesmaid dress was from a prima pattern. It seems that most issues come with a free gift these days. It m
ay be a bag or a document case or even a novel to read. I think that prima is worth the £2 it costs but I do not buy every issue as a lot of the same ground is covered as in magazines I still have from years ago. It is a magazine with something for many people but only worth buying if you like to make things whether craft or cookery.
