Advantages: Good Articles
Disadvantages: Inaccurate, out of date information
Radio Times is the oldest of the Tv listings magazines and also the most expensive. It still holds first place in many people's hearts; there is even a steady trade in radio Times back issues at Memorabilia fairs. Tv Times does not seem to have attracted the same kind of loyalty, and the newer listing magazines cannot even be placed in the same bracket. Radio Times features in depth articles on the hottest programmes around. It rarely bothers with articles about "soap" actors as so many of the other Tv Listings magazines do. It's whole look is more upmarket and more discerning. It also features cast listings for many of the Tv programmes that are to be shown. This can be extremely useful if you are looking out for appearances by a specific actress or actor. But what are it's downsides? Firstly, the price. It costs nearly 30p more than some of the other listing's magazines, and with newspapers offering free listing's guides at the weekend, many people will balk at the price and choose a cheaper option. Also, after comparing it to "What's on Tv" over a few weeks, I found that the Radio Times is far more likely to carry inaccurate and out of date listings. When you hear a TV announcer say something "and in a change to the programme featured in some listings magazines..." what they actually mean is the Radio Times got it wrong! In closing, buy the Radio Times for it's articles, but always check with Teletext before making plans to watch a show.

- 04/08/00 Yes, I must admit I don't actually like the radio times very much. It is frequently out of date, expensive as you say, and the listings are very poorly presented in my opinion. I'd not recommend it. Well done, a great opinion! |
