Advantages: lots of content
Disadvantages: some of it boring
Reader's Digest is a monthly magazine that comes out all over the world. It's famous because it's small (around half the size of a normal mag), and contains a real mix of articles broadly typified as 'general interest'.
I remember these from years and years ago. My grandparents often had them, and apart from that I often come across them in the doctors or other waiting rooms.
The best thing about them is there is so much to read. They have a lot of pages and are very compact. There are so many different articles that you have a LOT to read. The articles are often true life stories (of all types) and short stories. There is a lot of emphasis on text and not much on pictures, which again is something I like. In terms of time and value for money, there's a lot of content.
The worst thing is that the content varies widely. You never know what to expect, and it can be a bit hit or miss whether you will enjoy the stories. There can just be pretty much anything in there - sad stories, happy stories, stories about young people and stories about old people. All of the stories fall into the family genre, so there's nothing adult in there, but apart from that you just don't know.
The mag is written by all sorts of different authors, so you get a good mix of styles and vocabulary which keeps it fresh and interesting.
The size of the mag makes it ideal for popping in a bag or even rolling it up in your pocket. It actually makes me wonder why more people don't publish their mags in this manner.
All in all, this is a niec magazine that certainly offers a lot to read. It can be argued that there will be stories in there that will appeal to each person in the family individually, but if you happen to be looking for a mag you will enjoy in its entirety by yourself, you're unlikely to be satisfied by this.
Summary: do it
