Advantages: Quite a lot packed in

Disadvantages: Pretty uninteresting artcicles, The same old stuff in a new cover

I am totally fed up with womens magazines such as Company and Cosmopolitan. I don’t find the articles that interesting, and half of the magazine is adverts. I usually just opt to read my housemates copy of FHM because it is far more entertaining! So as I entered Tesco and began my usual browse of the magazine rack I was hoping for something new.

I was immediately blinded by the shocking pink advert on the cover of Real magazine. It might have well as said ‘buy me’. It was on half price special offer at 75p, and promised to be the magazine for the ‘modern
women’. With ‘Heartland reports on crucial issues affecting you’, ‘fascinating true-life stories’ and ‘latest reviews and news’ on important health issues/cosmetics/ fashion, I exclaimed “what more could I
want!!!”(which led to strange looks from the old lady with the blue rinse beside me). I handed over the cash and was hopeful my fortnightly Real magazine would live upto its promises and deliver a good read.

Managing to get past the shocking pink advert I mentioned earlier I discovered a photo of the cover girl, who wasn’t dolled up to the eyeballs and looked quite natural....but still far too pretty (green eyed monster strikes!!!) The big article in this issue is “THE 7 RELATIONSHIP DANGER POINTS”, which is accompanied by “MEN UNDER SEXUAL SEIGE”, “DOCTORS CHOSE MY GENDER” “GCSE’S AT EIGHT...AND NO FRIENDS”,“THE UNSPEAKABLE CRIME THAT CREATED OUR BELOVED BABY”and “HEALTH QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR MOTHER”. Hmmmmmm, I suppose it makes a difference from articles about pulling men and diet fads.

So what are the main articles like? To be honest some of them made me yawn. “Men under sexual seige” was something I knew about already, and thus I was not interested. The main article about Relationship danger
points concentrated on people’s experiences of the said dangers and gave some glaringly obvious advice. The two true life stories, “Doctors chose my gender” and “The unspeakable crime that created out beloved
baby” were very sad but not partiularly well written. They didn’t exactly leap out at you and portray the experiences. I did giggle at an article entitled ‘Who is the high maintenance woman?’ though, where I discovered that Katie spends £604.73 on beauty products a month, and looked no different to Joanna who spends £7.78 a month. It made me think what a sucker Katie was. There was also a little quiz underneath this, where I was pleased to find out that
I was like Jennifer Aniston because I have perfected the ‘natural’ look. I thought this was nice as I usually describe my look as
dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards.

I decided about half way through, when babies kept getting mentioned, that this is really a magazine for young mothers. All well and good if you are a young mother, but the advert didn’t tell you this! At least 5
or 6 articles were no go areas for me, disliking anything that wears a nappy and eats, sleeps and excretes all day.

Dotted between articles were the usual things such as letters to the editor, health questions, food, the agony aunt and horoscopes. There were also a couple of
celebrity profiles, one for the gorgeous ER doctor (which kept me amused for quite a while) and one for J-Lo (who tells us she loves her body as much as the entire male population....she’ll dissapear up her own
beautiful behind one of these days.) A few reviews on films and music could be found, and also advice on money and legal matters. A couple of pages on travel are also in there somewhere too. The lack of adverts
is quite pleasant I must say.

SO really there is quite a lot packed in to the 140 pages, but it is really just the same old stu
ff reguirgitated into this new magazine. I don’t feel I would buy it again, it was not anything too special. There are good points, such as the minimal advets and
the ER doctor, but the bad points seem to outnumber them. If you are a young mum, then give it a go, but I fear the average articles will leap up and smack you in the face too.

Hi aebone,I re-written my Shawshank Redemption op and would appreciate it if you could take another look at it and see if it deserves a re-rate! Thanks!

i've given up on women's magazines. Think I'll stick to lifestyle ones instead :)

I bought this issue too, and thought it was a decent enough read, got me through a 45 minute train journey. I used to buy Marie Claire but it's too huge to lug around these days! Never liked Cosmo or Company - boring drivel.
