Advantages: free CD every issues, loads of features, very indepth coverage and reviews
Disadvantages: Only released monthly!
Ah a music magazine that talks about music and doesn't discriminate. The lack of Pete Wentz's every toilet break or sexual fantasy with his ugly wife a thing of the past I have switched from Kerrang! to Rock Sound for a number of reasons.
Firstly the price. It costs £3.60 and is released every month [compared to Kerrang! which is out every week for £2.20]. The rviews and articles are far more detailed and tend to focus more dominantly on the music than idle gossip or the such and you always get a free CD with every issue. The CD features about 10 tracks or so that are unreleased as singles but often appear on artist's albums.
I also like that Rock Sound covers a variety of different genres from rock to indie, punk, eno and electronica.
The magazine itself is usually about 100 odd pages long and is packed with the usual magazine features such as reader's letters and adverts but the overall content is a lot more interesting. I like the fact that RS are not afraid to feature acts that have no record deal or are barely even heard of and give them big features. The 'Exposure' section si brilliant for this as I've founds loads of great new artists here that I wouldn't come across anywhere else and OK most of the information could easily be found ojn the internet but we all need to fulfil a certain need of something INTERESTING to read on the boring bus journey right?
RS seem far more focused on the music with a lot of their articles featuring the artists in question talking about their influences and styles more than how many groupies they've had or who has the biggest penis or some other junk. What really impressed me was the depth of the articles and the fact there's not just ong big featurette and that's it but several in one issue spanning againa variety of different acts and also the review section. From all the big genres it covers virtually every album release for the coming month with honest reviews and comparisions to similar artists so you can wean out the ones that might be of interest to you. This has t o be the best feature of the whole magazine as most of the albums reviewed here are not that easy to track down in the major record retailers as they're not as 'mainstream' as some, so it was great for me to find out that certain artists I'd been a big fan of the in past were releasing new material.
RS also carries reviews for the lastest cinema releases and the such.
All in all I thoroughly reccomend buying RS or even better just have a quick thumb through if you have a spare moment in your local newsagents or something. It's the sort of music magazine that the industry so sorely needs right now and miles ahead of all its competitors in my opinion none really and if the magazine covered pop and RNB and changed its name it truly would be the ultimate music magazine huh?
Summary: Great read for those into the rock/indie/punk/emo/electronica genres
