Advantages: Lots of recipes, inspirational stories

Disadvantages: Only every other month - though any more may be montonous

The Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness magazine is published every two months. It contains information and tips based around the successful diet and exercise plan devised by Rosemary Conley which centres around a low-fat, calorie conscious diet with regular light aerobic and toning exercise.

Every issue follows a similar format usually three features on slimming success stories, an exercise plan, recipes, a couple of celebrity features and a section of advice columns.

The slimming stories are quite inspirational and usually involve people who've attended Rosemary Conley diet clubs and lost a substantial amount of weight. They are always accompanied by graphic before and after photos which are the most dramatic part of the article. The exercise plans are a variation on an old theme - if you have any Rosemary Conley videos or books you will recognise the core of the exercise programs here with a new twist. The recipes follow a seasonal theme, for example - summer bar-b-q and picnic food, winter Christmas and party menus. The recipes are easy to follow and are never over complicated or fussy. I tend to find the celebrity features disappointing as they are appear to a thinly veiled celebrity interview with a big dose of 'yes I have figure problems too' which when compared to the 'real life' slimming success stories come across unconvincing however true the statement may be. The advice columns, including ones written by well-known television experts such as Denise Robertson and Dr Hilary Jones, include health, emotions/agony aunt, exercise, nutrition and pets. As you would expect the magazine carries a lot of adverts for other items in the Rosemary Conley range such as books, videos and there is a full directory of her diet & fitness club venues in the UK.

This magazine would appeal to both people who enjoy the camaraderie of the slimming diet clubs as well as those who'd rather diet on their own or with a clo
se friend. Because it is so specialist and has a set format it couldn't be published more often than every two months without becoming very monotonous. It is a good magazine to start or quick-start a flagging healthy eating and exercise plan. At £1.95 it represents good value and if you find it particularly useful I would suggest it is worth looking at the subscription offer which is currently £20 for 12 issues and comes with a free hotel accommodation offer.
