“ A monthly tatoo magazine „

Skin Deep is without a doubt the UK's best selling tattoo magazine on the market. And yes for those that are not aware, there are about five or six tattoo magazines out there. A few of them are imported though.
I started getting Skin Deep after I got my first tattoo. It is a magazine that features interviews with tattoo artists from all over the world and reviews conventions with plenty of pictures. This months issue (Jan '11 (on sale in December '10)) however sports the lovely Kat Von D (celebrity tattoo artist) on the cover with a nice long interview inside.
I bought the magazine continuously for about a year in 2009 before getting a subscription. The women on the front were not anyone that anyone knew. They were just professional tattooed models or uniquely tattooed girls-next-door.
The feel of the magazine is unlike any other. When reading it you feel part of a community. Unlike when I, as a female mechanic, read any type of car magazine, I feel slightly outcast just because the writing seems to aim at males. With Skin Deep you don't get that despite the tattoo industry being somewhat male dominated (but not for long!).
The magazine itself has your bog standard front. Cover girl (seldom a male) with random headings (but not so many that the front looks busy) and a big banner across the top stating something amazing is inside; usually they include a piece of flash which is a couple of pages of tattoo designs by one particular artist.
This month, just like the last few years at the end of the year, has included a calendar for the following year. The pictures on every month are all of light and heavily tattooed females of all shapes and sizes in colourful dress, provocative and strange positions/situations.
The content inside the magazine includes some advertising but not too much, unlike other publications. On the odd occasion there will be a feature on tattoo care or "Is tattooing a form of self harm?", or the best tattoo books on the market. Right at the beginning there is usually a two page spread on something amazing a tattoo artist has done or a reminder that a certain convention will be taking place. Sometimes there is a book review or two.
There is always a section listing the conventions over the coming year and it covers conventions in this country and all over the world. The pictures of tattoos are very detailed and well picked. You are never short of something beautiful to look at.
Since the new editor has taken the throne the layout has changed a little but the classifieds are still at the back. The "tattooist available" and "tattooist needed" sections are still there.

Skin deep is my 2nd favorite tattoo magazine. It started it's life as a small few pages in a UK biker magazine back in the 1990's and has since jumped ship and is a magaine in it's own right, I started buying the magaine in 2002 and it has been so informative, as well as friends that are tattooists I have learnt so much about the industry itself from this magazine and learnt to appreciate it as an art. I don't know what I would do without this magaine is it a complete essential in my life and not only contains interviews with tattooists but covers a wide range of topics and important issues relevant to the industry as well as adverts for tattooists and some articles written by much respected artists themselves.
This is such an important publication and is really close to my heart, the team at skin deep/jazz publishing put on the first Llandudno tattoo convention this year and due to profits from that and from the magazine also hopefully it will continue for years to come, an important publication with regards to the uk tattoo culture. Love it! :)
