i have been reading the somerset county gazette for ages now, even long enough as a decade and i say it is going down hill fast. the local events used to be many pages long but now it has squeezed itself into a little protion which i consider as being the same size as the "whats on at the cinema" column. i turn to the first few pages i see adverts for window cleaners, decorators ETC. i turn to the middle page and see many pages of car show room ads and such stuff. now then i do not believe that the somerset gazette is for the public any more i beleive it is for the main man in the gazette office and his hefty bank account. the price has rosen many times, probably double the old price and yet the price of printing the paper has not. and also there are less meaningfull columns which means less editors and reporters to be paid, all of this is a saving so why should there be more and more adverts needed? i leave this queston to you..
When the Youth of today do wrong it gets in the papers. When they do good it hardly gets a mention, so it is good to have a local rag that when someone young does good it gets a mention in their paper. The Somerset County Gazette is the local weekly paper for Taunton in Somerset area and outlying villages. It costs 55p and comes out officially on Fridays but you can find it in some newsagents on the Thursday night. This comes in useful if you are looking to buy a certain item like a car etc and you can look through the ads before everyone else thinks of going out and buying it! The Gazette is good but what makes it different from a lot of the local rags is that it has a section called Schools and Colleges. It gives many photos of youngsters doing good, receiving certificates and generally telling you what is happening in different schools. This is so refreshing to read. I think the Gazette has more photos of local events than the average paper and photos taken very professionally too. Some of the other items it covers are sport of course. This has a good wide coverage and not just covering football but darts and karting events. Of course it gives the otherside of things with court cases and various injuries to people and buildings and property. On the whole though this paper looks on the bright side of life and the goodness that is going on in the County. The motor section is very good and if you are selling or buying anything with a motor in it then this is the paper to advertise in and look through. I only have one little moan about this paper and that is the "what happened 5 10 15 20 25 50 years ago. I wish if they are going to print an article under one of t
hese headings saying this was front news that many years ago, that they would try and tell the person it is about to be printed, or their relatives. It is a shock to open the paper and see a loved one in it and a story about them. Even if it was in my case, that they made front page rescuing someone. They should definately ask if only to warn the person if still alive or their family.
