Advantages: Deals with real life issues in a responsible way.
Disadvantages: The Sugar branded products can be a bit tacky...
In comparison to other magazines aimed at teenage girls, Sugar is a lot more tame. A lot of parents worry about what their younger daughters choose to read, but if they buy Sugar, there's nothing to worry about. Regular features include 'How Embarrassing' (cringeworthy stories sent in by readers, as well as a celebrity tale of humiliation), 'The Style Council' (where readers send in questions/problems about fashion and get an answer/solution from one of the staff), 'Ask Anything' (problem pages answered by an agony aunt as well as a real doctor for more serious issues) and 'Over To You' (a new section showcasing reader talent). The magazine has a mix of light hearted features (friendship quizzes, terrible photographs of celebrities) and more serious issues (teenage pregnany, rape, drugs, etc). The way that the magazine covers issues of varying levels of seriousness and how it includes real life stories, gives it appeal for teenagers of thirteen as well as those of nineteen. Sugar is sadly becoming more and more 'Buy All Sugar Branded Stuff!!!!' orientated each issue. However, it is a well balanced magazine which parents should not be afraid to let their daughters buy. It answers all the questions that you'd rather they didn't ask you and discusses all the issues that are relevant to them in a responsible way. Sugar also tries to promote the idea that 'size doesn't matter', and in its annual modelling competition always has a category for bigger size models. At £1.90, it's an ok buy.

libertybell - 29/12/00 Are you old enough to remember Jackie from the 1970's - very little sex in that girls paper - more Bay City Rollers and horse riding. Then in the late 1970's along came 'My Guy' which articles on boys, periods, dating etc. My Mother was not impressed that my 14 year old sister read it. Do times change that much ?? |
