“ Genre: Puzzles / Published: Monthly „
I usually get magazines passed on to me to read, which I am quite happy about, but practically every month, I like to purchase this Take A Break Arrowwords puzzle book in the supermarket for £1.70, which I like to keep beside my bed, or in the car, to pass the time, or help me switch off at the end of a long day.
Many people know Take A break for their real life based magazine and puzzle competitions, and this Arrowwords puzzle book contains a few competitions as well.
Each month's issue of Arrowword follows a very similar pattern, with the first page being a small competition to win some cash, followed by pages upon pages of puzzles when you follow the clue in the box and the arrow to where to write the answer. Within most of the puzzles in the magazine, there are celebrities to name as clues or pictures to identify. There are also a few other puzzles such as picture arrowords (using entirely pictures as clues), there are some 'backwards' puzzles, anagrams, hexagons, and 'dilemma' which is a puzzle involving numbered clues with two sets of clues to fit in two puzzles.
My favourite obviously, is the regular arrowword puzzles. I love beign able to complete a puzzle, and the more of them that you do, you become familiar with some of the answers since frequently you will find clues repeated in different magazines.
THere is also an answer section at the back with answers to each puzzle, with the obvious exception of the competition puzzles. I often use this to check the answers when I cannot complete a puzzle, and I feel that I am learning something new!
For £1.70 I think this is a great puzzle book and suitable for all ages. I know some people prefer proper crosswords, but I have always liked arrowwords and love having all the squares filled in to complete one. There is enough easy clues mixed with more difficult clues to make the puzzles challenging.
All in all, I love this puzzle book and will continue to purchase it.
In my spare time when my son was having a nap through the day I liked to sit and relax and often found myself doing puzzles but I always preferred the arrow words so when I seen take a break had a magazine full of only arrow words I had to buy it! Now I buy it every time a new one comes out which is once monthly and its costs only £1.70.
Arrow word puzzles are boxes with clues/hints inside them and each clue has an arrow pointing in a set direction where the answers are then written. Some arrow words have written clues and others can have picture clues and with over 60 different grids in each issue there is plenty to keep you busy in your spare time. There are different competitions in each issue which you can win a range of prizes from such as £1000 or an ipod!
Each page in the magazine either has 1 or 2 arrow words on it apart from 1 which goes across two pages and has a mixture of picture and arrow words! I tend to find I can very rarely finish a puzzle by myself so I usually have to pester my husband to get him to help. This is a great puzzle book to sit and relax with and has plenty arrow words to keep you amused in your spare time.
