Advantages: Great weekly mag at an affordable price
Disadvantages: none
I would say that this has to be one of the best weekly magazines available. Each new edition is available every Thursday from all good newsagents or supermarkets.
The magazine starts with a double page feature called Take a Break Street which is full of readers photographs and funny captions, a great mix is found here from cute to funny. The page also has the magazne contents.
Going on through the magazine we have loads of great stories. All of the stories featured are from real readers and have real names and photos. I do find that the majority of the stories are about illness and death but do show how couragious people are in overcoming their problems. Take a Break do pay a fee for every story used and published.
They have a page called the Brainwaves roadshow which is full of ideas and solutions from readers, things you might find here are ways to cover your vacuum to make it look nicer, making more storage space in your wardrobe or help for the garden.
There is a great health section which always contains great advise and real life problems, in this feature you can also write to a real Doctor who will publish your letter and his response.
They are currently running a 'mums for justice' campaign which is telling of the problems people are encountering with the Child Support Agency and trying to rally some help for this.
There is a great double page fashion feature every week which is refreshing as it shows real fasion at affordable prices which is much better than others as usually the clothes are too outragous to be worn or way too pricey.
Liz Wilde does a beauty problem page where you can wirte and ask for help wih hair or beauty related problems.
Every week they print some great tasty recipies which also contain the information about the calories, sugars, fats, saturates and salt to each dish. I find that there is always a great variety to be found here.
The travel pages always contain great information an photographs which really make you want to be there.
The magazine features a family called the Grumps who are very hard to please. Each week they are given a product to test and they give their review from each brand tested and rate them out of 10, they always tell you the best ones they have found and which you should stash!
As usual there is a problem page which offers great advise and your weekly horoscopes.
There is always a 'coffee break fiction' story which are usually funny and are great to read.
The back page contains a feature called sensible and barmy where readers write in and tell of sensible or daft things they have done. Here you will also find the stocks and the throne where people nominate their family and friend to go on each for the week.
There are 14 puzzles to be done each week which range from a 4-squared to a code breaker and arrow words. Each week they also feature a new puzzle. There is a very handy entry form on the last but one page which makes entering easier. They also publish a winners list every week which I find quite unusual as some magazines dont do this.
We do have some advertisements in the magazine but I do not find them too much or overpowering and some of them can be quite helpful.
The magazine is a great price at 76p and I think this is well worth the money as it is not full of useless celebrity gossip and gives real stories and problem.
A big thumbs up to editor Joel Swincer and publishers H Bauer for this great magazine.
