Take A Break
Advantages: Cheap, Lots of good reading and comps.
Disadvantages: A bit depressing at times
As a guy who is married, and have two teenage daughters (well one is almost there *12 going on 16*), I have become accustomed to finding womens magazines around the house.
One of the magazines I regularly find is 'Take a Break'. The magazine is published by H Bauer, which is the largest privately owned publisher in Europe.
It costs 80p and comes out every Thursday. Availability, unlike some magazines, I believe is extremely good.
So what do you get for your 80p? Well the magazine itself is in colour and quite bright. Each week the pages vary a little in size, but on average I would guess there are 70 pages or so, to keep you with some reading material.
Each week there are many competitions with some great prizes, so for those compers out there, it is a must. Personally I have never won anything, but they do list the names of the winners.
Another major input with the magazine is readers stories. Some are very funny, others are very sad. Depending on what mood I'm in, I often skip the sad ones.
As to whether all the stories are in fact true, I don't know. I'm sure Take a Break do all they can to ensure they are. However when you start waving money, several hundred pounds in some instances, I'm sure that there must be some artistic licence going on, at least in some of them.
The readers are also encouraged to send in photos, funny pictures of their kids etc. which lightens up the magazine somewhat.
The magazine also has regular recipe pages, which are easy to follow. My wife has tried a few with great success.
As with all magazines, there is some advertising, but I don't consider it excessive, and it doesn't detract from the magazine. At the end of the day, if it keeps the price down, in my opinion it is a price worth paying.
