Advantages: Sports reporting is excellent
Disadvantages: Its hate filled pages
Occassionally Star Trek would make an episode which is basically a reverse of the real world, its normally called the nu-universe, in the nu-universe The DAily Mail would be a paper looking at the lighter side of life, with generous and engaging views on immigration, foreign policy, caring for mums with a child but no partner and a love for the diversity of life that is modern day Britain.
That would be in the nu-universe, but in the real world of 21st century Britain we have to put up with a hate filled, openly in my view racist, xenophobic, rage filled paper whose only reason to be is a wish to keep the middle class, white english reader enraged over the changes happening in the country.
My father in law, is a man whose lived his whole life in the city of Leeds, he's eighty and like a lot of men from that period is a borderline racist, and defintely a xenophobe and dislikes spongers and benefit cheats. Thats him, he used to read the Mirror which is a more left wing paper but for some reason started to buy the Daily Mail mostly on Saturday and Sunday and has over the last few years become increasingly racist and narrow minded. I'm convinced that its the influence of the paper he's reading, so what ever the current affairs at the time this paper would try to tie into the story immigration, benefits cheats, european interference and finish with a morality tale over a rose tinted England of warm beer and cricket.
Let me give one very small example : The paper had on page 5, a list of foreign nationals living in the UK with a headline which read something like "Three million Asians in the UK" or something along those lines. He pushed the article towards me and said "There more of those Paki's moving into England everyday, every day" I said he was a bit racist.
So I read the article and you couldn't deny that the number of Asians in the country was around 3million, however, what the article failed to mention was the far higher number of Germans, Australians, Americans and French (when taken as a collective number), including well over 1million Germans and French on their own. Did the article mention these white Europeans or those of colonial descent - of course not! The article only mentioned those of a different coloured skin, and that was the aim make the reader feel as though the white society is threatened and about to be destroyed.
Do they achieve this? In my mind they are getting closer, the news is increasingly becoming a scare story after scare story and the daily headlines are more and more panicked. Do we need this? No, its self defeating.
I don't agree with the politics of the Daily Mail but I enjoy reading the Daily Express and Telegraph without feeling this horrid sense of Britain for the British and the rest can go and disappear. The Daily mail is a hate filled newspaper, its only redeeming feature is a superb sports section and a good crossword.
This paper is for me toxic, its the Jeremy Kyle of the newspaper world and the quicker it lightens up a bit the better.
Summary: This paper is toxic

- 19/09/09 A horrible rag the Daily Wail. A bigot's delight though. Anything to sell newspapers to the gullible and to stir up trouble. |

- 18/09/09 Na, we are a right wing country by nature and thats how tolerance works. We all hate each other and so stay away from each other.lol |

- 18/09/09 I detest the mail, it's sole aim seems to be to create an unpleasant and split society. Apparently, immigration is the cause of all evil..according to the mail at least. "Jeremy Kyle of the newspaper world"- completely agree! |
