Advantages: Football Coverage, Joan Burnie

Disadvantages: Populist

I read the Daily Record nearly every day. As a Scot living down south it is the only paper available which reflects life in Scotland.

To be honest I usely read the back pages first as it's coverage of football though heavliy biased to the Old Firm and transfer rumours is fairly good. In the world of Beckhams and Verons its refreshing to read about players that play just for the fleeting chance of glory.

However the rest of the paper is no better than the 'rags' down south. I suppose we should not expect any more from a tabliod but I do remember when the Record could justifiably call itself the Voice of Scotland. This all changed when Robert Maxwell and his sidekick Helen Liddell took control.

Now it's no better than The Sun and whatever views it has are lite New Labour. I could just about take it's gagging of Tommy Sheridan's opinion on drugs because I am sure Mr. Sheridan is big enough to take it on the chin.

What is unacceptable is it's stance on the recent murder in Sighthill, Glasgow of an asylum seeker. The Old Record would have condemned this without reserve whether the attack was racist or not.

The New Record slant on this is to splash across it's front page the fact that he may have been a economic rather than a political refugee. What makes this worse is that stuck away on page 8 there is a mealy-mouthed editorial saying that it is merely stating the facts and that killing people is still wrong.

You don't need to be a professor in media studies to know that they splashed the 'asylum cheat' across their front page to sell copies to people who are looking for some excuse to justify the unjustifiable.

They sold a few more copies, they are still bigger than The Sun but at what cost? I will still by the Record occasionaly, when I want a fix of Celtic v Rangers, but when my 3 year-old son is old enough to read it will be straight for the bin along with the o
ther rags.

Hi, welcome to Dooyoo. I parted company with the Record a few years ago, but like you, my hubbie still buys it now and again for the football.
