Advantages: Achieve excellent "A" level grades - see below
Disadvantages: Takes you all week to read it!
I haven't bought this magazine for about 6 years, and I must admit, I actually quite miss it these days. In order for you to understand this review a little better, let me paint a background picture.... When I was in the 6th form, I studied "A" level English, History and Economics. I was interested in all three subjects, though not awfully brilliant at any of them. I wanted to stay in the 6th form though, and gain some qualifications, so decided on these 3 subjects. As regular dooyoo readers will probably get the impression of, I am of the philosophy of "why write one word when twenty will suffice", ie. I warble on for ages without actually getting to the point! This skill proved very valuable, as I was able to waffle my way through the History and English essays, stating my arguments about thirty times, thus achieving the 2,000 words for each essay. However, this skill proved a problem in Economics, as I didn't really have a clue about the subject matter, and throughout the lower sixth, my marks were an estimated "U" or "N". I felt quite guilty about this, and on a whim, I subscribed to "The Economist". At first glance, this publication looked really boring, but when I got into it, it made things really clear for me, and in my essays I was able to draw out some really good current examples, from the ideas in the magazine. My tutor thought this was great and my marks literally zoomed up overnight. Instead of the usual "Terry Pratchett" books, I used to absorb the pages of The Economist like blotting paper and ink. You may think that this was rather sad of me, but when I tell you that I actually gained a "C" grade for "A" level Economics from an estimated "U" in a year, I would put this down to the fact that I religiously read every page of the Economist magazine. So, thank you, Economist, I am truly grate
ful! I have since never needed any of that useless information about Bulls and Stags and drawing recession graphs, but there we go!

vhart - 19/11/00 Reading this brought memories of my A level economics back.. oh, how I hated those classes. I remember staying up to listen to 'The financial world at night' on Radio 4 every night, and wading through the Financial Times in the hope that if I stared at an article long enough it would eventually become interesting! I also read the Economist though, and like you, found it to be quite interesting in parts. Especially as I was doing Politics as well. |
