I study Mathematics at University and towards the end of my second year I began to think about actually getting a job. One area I know that Mathematicians are often employed in is the Finance world. However, despite the fact that this type of work appealed to me, I didn't have a clue - I thought 'Blue chip' was a mouldy potato. As I got more and more panicked I decided to bite the bullet and purchas a copy of the Economist, a publication which I had hitherto avoided for fear of ebing drowned in a tidal wave of supply and demnd curves and isoquants and all the other funny little things that I tried so hard not to learn in my first year intro to economics class. However, surprise surprise, upon my first read I was very pleasnatly surprised. The magazine seemed to steer clear of most (not all) of the high tech analysis that frightens off most people. What I found was that the Economist is a very witty, informed and exceptionally luminating guide to what is going on in the world of business, politics and new technology. The magazine has a regular structure which includes a page of brief headlines concerning politics in the previous week and business in the previous week. It then looks more in depth at issues in Britain, Europe, United States, The Americas, International, Asia, Business, Finance and Economics. No matter what the topic the Economist always seeks to "take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress". It has been seven months since I started reading this magazine and I can honestly say it is one of the joys of my week, it has really helped me on my (successful) search for a job. If you're in need of an informative read please don't hesitate.

Even though I am an arts student, I am tempted to run out and buy a copy of this magazine. Brave New World here I come!
