The Economist is the best English-language news and current affairs magazine in the world. Published in London every Friday (Thursday, 10pm GMT if you are a subscriber and have access to the internet), it opens with half a dozen leaders on the week's main issues followed by sections on current affairs in Britain, Europe, the United States, the Americas, International and Asia. Then come sections on Business, Finance and Economics, Science and Technology and the occasional special section on, for example, books.

First published in September 1843, The Economist's motto is to take part in "a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress." Written in plain, jargon-free English, the style is thoughtful and a little ironic. Politicians are routinely unmasked and yet the tone is always positive.

The letters page is littered with contributions from politicians, ambassadors, bankers, business(wo)men, scientists, even artists. If you really want to know what is happening in the world and to understand why, read The Economist.

I've been deterred by the name in the past (esp. since I spent 5 years working at HM Treasury, which didn't give me a fondness for economics), but my sister tells me it's very good. I gather that it's mainly about politics, not economics as we understand it today.
