Advantages: Softer on yer bum than The Times

Disadvantages: Sleazy, two faced hypocrites

Back in the eighties when street poets were cool there was one who wrote a poem entitled 'You never get a nipple in the Daily Express'. His poem really reflected my views on this paper.

The Express likes to think of itself as miles above other tabloids like The Sun, and simply a different size to real newspapers.

Personally I find the Express more offensive than The Sun and The Mirror. It claims to be above the sleazy papparazzi activities of 'lesser' papers, but is always packed full of gossip and snatched photographs, particularly of royalty.

The main thrust of the paper is family values, yet it takes great delight in offering multi page spreads on people caught out in adultery or 'inappropriate' sexual behaviour, thereby bringing sleaze onto the family breakfast table.

The treatment of women in the Express is little better than in the downmarket tabloids as it assumes that all that women are capable of reading and understanding is horoscopes and diets.

The sports and TV coverage is average, and news reporting is adequate at best.

If you want to read the news opt for The Independent, The Guardian or the Telegraph, preferably alternating between the three. If you want something to read on the train buy a book. If you just want gossip over your breakfast pick up The Sun or The Mirror, at least they bring a smile to your face.
