News without the frills (Daily Express)
Name: sheehawkins
Advantages: Easy to read without too much gossip Disadvantages: still contains some cheap snipes at the famous
I have been reading the express on and off for much of my life. My parents used to take it when I was a child - and we had a headmaster who was a stickler for children knowing what was happening in the world. He was liable to fire a current affairs question at you whenever he met you, and if you couldn't answer then you got a detention - Oh those were the days..... but then I digress. I got into the habit of reading a newspaper, and have always done so ever since. During my teens, I transfered my allegiance to the Sun, prefering what I thought was their snappy style and sense of fun. God how can I dare to admit that ???? Suddenlyin my early twenties I grew up overnight, and found that rag was not worth the paper it was written on, and I trawled through the other common dailies avoiding the Express like the plague, because to read that would be to admit that I was middle aged and sensible. Finally in desperation I gave in to the old age and bought a copy - blessed relief - a newspaper with no frilly elaboration, no naked flesh, and a lot less of the sniping and bitching at anyone famous that some of the more tawdry rags resort to. At the weekend, the magazine contains the weekly TV listings, so I no longer have to buy a TV mag, and it also contains a crossword that is not cryptic, but is hard enough to make the brain cells work a little to find the answer. And best of all it contains all the current news so if I ever bump into that old headmaster I will be able to avoid a dentention :-) Summary: |
