Advantages: Gives you real news, which is important to your day.
Disadvantages: You may find it boring.
What is it?
Broad Sheet news paper giving news with an economic focus.
The FT is not for everyone. It is not for a paper down the local, or one that you can hear some of the lighter news. It is however, the best printed paper out there. The reason for this last someone out there statement is because FT brings the news that really matter and displays very raw news if you can read between the lines.
Now not wanting to sound unsympathetic however, there is a lot of evil in this world and unfortunately what happens to immigrants in Thailand or protesters in China is not going to effect what I do today or this weekend. Finding out about arrested Rio Tinto employees and what's happening to Darling's banking reforms do alter my day if only it is who to invest in and whats going on in politics.
Also the reason why their raw news is so reliable is because if you base your financial plan on that news and it turns out to be untrue or twisted then you would stop reading their news.
Like I said the FT is not for everyone. For some people learning about Stuart Rose's fate or Nationwide's new extended morgage is not going to effect their day in the slightest and they find it quite boring. For these sort of people I recommend a different paper, but for the ones which want an economic slant with a fantastic company and markets section (akin to other paper's business section) I whole heartily recommend the FT in all it's pink glory.
Summary: If you want to get into economics read it. If not then don't.
